This guy happens to be my favorite nonogenarian around, so I was excited to hear his talk. I know a mention of it was posted earlier, but I thought I'd put out the full text. Earlier he also gave a talk on Loyalty. I won't post it, but here is the link.

Does anybody have stats on what percentage of Mormons join the military (especially as compared with the population at large)? I am inclined to believe that it's much lower than the general population; but correct me if I am wrong.

I would find those numbers of interest as well. My father was a fighter pilot for 30 yrs. My sister married a fighter pilot, who is over there now flying A-10's and their son is a FAC, also over in Iraq at this time. I am LDS and I know there are several from our congregation that have been called up and are serving. I did find this statistic at:

Hinkley, the guy who was dupped by Mark Hoffman (where was the spirit of the Lord on this transaction?), is a silly, PR minded old man. If the war did not go in favor of the US, this spinner of spinners wouldn't have spoken. He is a pompous old wind-bag -- and I'm being kind. A cult is a cult is a cult, even if it is headed by grown men wearing pin-stripe suits.

Explain to me what makes your "religion" something other than a "cult". Explain to me how you can demonstrate such raw HATE towards a kind, elderly man and still call yourself a Christian.

This is purely anecdotal, but in my Ward (a congregation of approximately 500) we have over 9 young adult males and 1 young adult female who have enlisted since 9/11 -most have been deployed to the Iraqi conflict. Of these, the Bishop has all 3 of his adult sons in the military - 1 of which is deployed.

I know this is anecdotal, but my current experience and what I've seen as a Mormon my entire life disproves your theory.

Thanks for responding. In any event, my inclination was based on the high number of boys who go on missions, thus, perhaps, removing them from circulation at the stage in life when it's normal to make the decision to go military. It certainly was not based on any perception of lack of patriotism.

Of course, any statistics generated during WW II, Korea, Vietnam, or any period when there was a generalized draft, would not be meaningful in this context.

All three of my Bishop's sons who have enlisted since 9/11 served 2 year mission prior to enlistment. The 2 year mission actually better prepares a young man for military service as he learns individual responsibility, discipline, maturity, and often learns a foreign language and culture if he serves a foreign mission.
