Ahhh an honest man . The fact is that thread is more about vacations and jokes and sports and gifs than religious discussion and as such it is really a general thread. But hey you guys pay to play so I guess house rules say you can name it anything you want
Oh there's definitely some ugliness in my church's history (and in most others as well), I won't deny that. I do think they honestly believed they were indeed defending doctrine.
Al you and I have been friends a long time I figured you understood what I meant even if "Conservative" didn't. That was not a "slap" at the Catholic Church ..it was just a point.. There was a time when it was expected that men not only go to church on Sunday ..but that they defend their faith strongly. Today the general belief seems to be we need to go to go to the Rodney King school of theology "Cant we all just get along" Well if that is the purpose iof the religion forum her JR should close it down.There are a million RC forums out there..almost as many Mormon ones and alot of Protestand ones..
That way every group can find their own kind and all agree together that they are right and the rest are wrong and pat themselves on the back while they do it.
What MADE FR different was it allow the right of freedom of religion to play out ..and allowed people with different beliefs to engage in apologitics . But Rodney King has won and Luther and Erasmus have to go else where..Theyu just were not polite enough to post here
On the Neverending thread there are Catholics and Baptists and a Jew and many other different types of Christians.
We are not segregated. If I only went to a Cahtolic forum, to pat myself on the back, I would not have learned the things I did from the Baptists and others.
The Thread is exactly the point of a civil discussion. We don't need to be constantly at each others' throats. We got our mutual anathemas out of the way. Maybe you think that one should only associate with those one agrees with, but I do not.
But taking each day to remind (for example) my Baptist friends that they are going to hell if they don't go to Mass is not constructive.
Still, still, still you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
I believe that part of living a Christ-like life is finding the Christ inside of everyone you meet.

I agree wholeheartedly. But I think faith generally can be defended civily. Like you said, we've been friends a long time (in fact, if I remember correctly, you were my first debate on FR) so you know I will gladly engage in a debate with people of other faiths provided they (and I) can keep our cool and not lash out at others. Once the lashing out starts, the debate is no longer a debate but more like a contest to see who can point out the worst of each other's church. That's not constructive and only increases the angst between faiths.
