The likely candidate is from a Traditional Benedictine monastery somewhere, who is of no importance in the present corrupt version of the church..... A couple of years ago someone asked JP II about his successor. At that time he said he had not appointed him yet to the College of Cardinals. Any recent appointments from the Benedictines? Does the Pope have to be a Cardinal to be chosen? I read somewhere he does not.

No, and actually, I don't even believe he has to be a clergyman. Of course, once elected, he would have to be made a bishop, since by definition he is the Bishop of Rome.
