Anyone have any experience with Legion of Christ/Regnum Christi? I have found disparagement in the usual sources National Catholic Reporter, etc. But I'm wondering if anyone has personal experiences to relate.

I haven't had extensive experiences, but they've been preety good. Some LCs have moved into San Jose to help with a Regnum Christi school there. They seem very devoted to the Holy Father. I wouldn't trust what the Reporter says. I believe the founder of the LC also started the National Catholc Register.

I believe that the Regnum Christi Movement, bought the National Catholic Register when it went up for sale.

The Regnum Christi Movement is a Lay Apostolate who's objective is to grow in holiness, evangelize in the world, to spread the Gospel. They are in line with the Catholic Church, faithful to the Magisterium and to the Holy Father. They have a website: http://www.regnumchristi.org/english/index.phtml

The Legionaries of Christ are the spiritual advisors of the RC members. I have never heard anything bad about them and they are wonderfully, devoted priests. Thier founder, Fr. Maciel is a very holy man, like other good and faithful servants, he has taken a bad rap about false accusations against him. They also have a website. Both the Legionaries and the Regnum Christi are proud members of the Church Militant.

p.s. this is not Cap'n replying, this is his wife, I just wanted to answer the question since I know members of the RC.

I have no personal experience but everything I have heard bears out Mrs. Cap'n Crunch's comments. I think they are a good group.

Apart from unsubstantiated allegations against their founder I haven't heard anything bad about them.

They seem to be an orthodox society which while committed to the Novus Ordo are quite traditional in their theology and piety.

I have heard it said that 25% of American priests will be from their ranks in the next 20 years

My brother taught in a Legionnaires school in St. Louis and had some very grave concerns about various issues there, however did not see any evidence of sexual deviance. I can't recall everything at this moment. I will look for the link that I had found about them several months ago re homosexuality Also there was a piece last year on TV re homosexuality in their seminary. It is all quite puzzling because Fr. Marciel (?sp) is a good friend of the Pope.

Others can confirm whether this is true or not, but I have been told by good sources that the Legion of Christ, like Opus Dei, is opposed to the Indult Mass.

I visited their seminary in Connecticut ca 1990 and found them to be very orthodox and devout. They were all, shall we say, manly men! I was amazed at how rapidly they were growing - the novices had to sleep in cots on the floor because they were running out of space. I believe William Webster (? is that right? The ex-CIA chief under Reagan) donated a chuck of money to them to expand their facilties. Greek and Latin were required study as was Gregorian Chant. At that time, all advanced study was to be done in Rome with carefully selected (i.e. orthodox) lecturers. I believe this was the time that they were first opening the Regina Apostolorum, a Papal school (?) run by them in Rome. Many people compare them to the old time Jesuits - back when Jesuits actually could walk on water! All the young men seemed bright and tended to be well balanced all around. Quite a few I talked to had been captain of their football teams in high school and such. A couple were made aware of the order through EWTN. All seemed excited and focused about bringing people to Christ. I remember a quote from one of the newly ordained young Priests (by the Pope in Rome) to the effect that "young people don't care whether or not I can play the guitar or know the current top 40, but they do expect me to now about Christ and His Church!" It was so counter to the "wisdom" of the 70's attitude that many other Priests had.

This order is not for all orthodox young men seeking to be Priests. Their biggest complaint is that they are too "Spanish" style for America. That they all walk in lockstep. Oh well. I have heard that the Pope expects their Order to do for Vatican II what the Jesuits did for Trent - he wants them to re-Christianize Europe. I think in the coming years that they will be just the Order to do so! Time will tell.

I'm also aware that their founder, Fr. Maciel, wrote a book about formation to the Priesthood at the request of the Pope.

Concerning them and the so called "scandal" involving their founder, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus has this to say about in the March 2002 issue of Public Square of First Things under the title of "Feathers of a Scandal".

<> One of my old, extreme,far-right wing, Indult buddies from Maine has a son who will become a Legion-priest. I too have heard rumors about their founder but my ol' buddy, John, says they are on the up-'n-up and his son is a good man

<> Thanks for the Post. As an aside, it can be pointed out that this is another example of what the Pope is doing about the desueteude in Catholicism.

It is EASY to fire everybody's ass and excommunicate everyone in sight. But, this Pope will be known as Pope St. John Paul the Great becuase of his positive actions.

He is building...<>

Well, the Holy Spirit is doing it. This Order is obedient to the Pope and Magisterium, and that is why they are growing. Others are not, and are not. The Pope continues to encourage them - that's his part.

It is EASY to fire everybody's ass and excommunicate everyone in sight.

Press Release:

Central Headquarters report that there will be a major reshuffling/reorganization of the North American upper management team due to dissapointing 3rd quarter results.

John Paul II. CEO

??????????????????????????????????????????????

It is not easy, and for those pushing this idea - I recommend a review of Catholic ecclesiology. The Pope is head, and sign of unity among, and with, his brother bishops. Ask yourself, to what extent could St. Peter have "fired" one of the other 12 Apostles - chosen and graced by Christ Himself along with Peter?

Besides, where is the 2nd team who will magically make things better overnight? Truth be told, despite the so many major mistakes having been made by many Bishops, most of them are trying to be good and holy. As Dallas showed, they, as a whole, are a weak and wimpy bunch, which is all the more reason for us to do our duties and pray for them. Just more proof that we are all completely dependent on God's Grace and not our own actions.

And since this is a slow thread......... Just wanted to ask about....

I'd sooner use the rusty pop-top off an old Billy Carter Beer Can to remove my eustachian tubes than to have to listen to either a Beatles song that includes the Sitar...

Even 'Norwegian Wood'? Albeit, an immoral song about one of Lennon's adulterous dalliances. Good melody though!

<> Yeah, any song with a sitar.

Me bride, while at college, went to a concert that featured Rabid Shankar as one of the performers. She said he got a huge round of applause. I asked her if she knew anyone that actually liked his music -"No, we just appaluded because he finished."

"Norwegian Wood?" Dang, I haven't heard that song in forever. I don't recall it had a sitar, but, I trust you and so I won't ever listen to it in the future:)<>

"Norwegian Wood?"

Yea, it was the first song George experimented with the sitar on. Then came George's "Love you To" and "Within You, Without You". Lennon confessed that the song was about one of his many extra-marital affairs.

Lennon talented - Yes!

Smart - NO!
