Interesting point of view, for one who is following Jesus. I guess He was just joking in Matt16:18

Matthew 16:18 ... ?

Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, ... Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14 And they said, ... Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, ... But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, ... Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, ... Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

Interestingly, it appears the point of the passage is the identity of JESUS, rather than Peter. Perhaps JESUS, himself, is the ROCK upon which the church is built.

Peter, himself, testified to this ...

1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Oh, ... and, by the way, we're rocks too. (verse 5)

      Perhaps so ...

I have heard verse 18 paraphrased as,
"You are a pebble (Peter), and I will build my church on this boulder (Christ) ..."

<> That makes no sense. "You are rock and upon this rock I wil build my church" if intended to refer to Jesus Himself could not have had a poorer sentence construction. Did Jesus desire to confuse folks?

Nevermind answering...We each believe this means totally diferent things but we are still within Unity according to your earlier post. It is all too confusing for me, so I will just follow the Divinely-constituted authority on Earth.<>
