Thanks for the link. The Carmelites of Compiègne insisted that the record reflect their free-will gifts of their lives: "No one takes my life from me; I give it willingly." This they did as a holocaust, an offering to God for the sins of France and an end to the Terror.
And indeed the Terror did come swiftly to an end. In less than two weeks came the final bloodbath, in which Robespierre himself, among others, followed the martyrs of Compiègne to the scaffold. Very shortly afterwards the Terror collapsed.
