I was surprised to read that the Nauvoo temple was open to the general public, as other temples are not.

Actually, that's not quite correct. All our temples are typically open to the public for a period just after their construction, a so-called "Open House."

Afterward, they are dedicated and then are open only to members of the Church in good standing. This is true for Nauvoo as well as all the others that have been constructed.
