Chartres has a labyrinthe as well. It's a metaphor for our pilgrimage in this world.
I could be wrong but I believe the Chartres labyrinthe was made as a substitute for the pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the days when pligrimaging in that direction usually cost you your head. So they walked the labyrinthe instead.
