I just was told by a LDS friend that the Holy Spirit is an unembodied spirit child of the fathers..like Jesus. And that at some point He may choose to come to earth in a body and marry ..so he can progress..was that wrong?
Wrong several ways! The Holy Ghost has a corporal body made of material we would call spirit. One Apostle said to think of it as electricity in a pure form(1850's, Parley Pratt).
We also think that the spirit in your body now, when separated at death has a corporal shape nearly identical to your physical body. Of this I think I have personal knowledge, since in one of my near death experiences I watched doctors work on me to bring me back to life. But the spirit body of the Holy Ghost would be a celestial form and far more glorious than ours. The word "disembodied" by your friend could mean that the Holy Ghost does not have a physical body of flesh and bone like the Father and Son.
We do not know anything really about the relationship of the Holy Ghost to the Father or Son, but to say that it was sometime before you were created, also a child of the Father seems possible, but does not really need to be so.
As far as coming to earth to gain a body and to marry, that to me is like X-Files material! The Holy Ghost is God, a member of the Godhead, I cannot imagine that anything else is needed. He by simply being a glorified celestial personage of spirit by nature is eternally progressing, I cannot think of anything that can improve upon perfection.
