After Cushing and before Law, Humberto Cardinal Medeiros was Archbishop of Boston. Medeiros took over sometime between 1967 and 1973 (sorry I can't remember) and died in 1983.

So, Cushing was a predecessor of Law just not his immediate predecessor. Thanks, maryz.

Madeiros took over in 1969 after Cushing's death. He had been Bishop of Brownsville, Texas, for four years.

Madeiros' "kingmaker" was Bishop Thomas Gorman of Dallas who had known met Madeiros at a session of Vatican II.

Interestingly, Madeiros tabbed a young priest in Fall River to get his degree in Canon Law in Rome in 1964; that young priest later became my bishop, Joseph Delaney in Fort Worth.
