Orémus Pro Pontífice

V/. Orémus pro Pontífice
    nostro Joánne Paulo.

R/. Dóminus consérvat eum,
    et vivíficet eum,
    et beátum fáciat eum in terra,
    et non tradat eum
    in ánimam inimicórum ejus.

V/. Let us pray for our Pope
    John Paul!

R/. May the Lord preserve him,
    and give him life,
    and make him blessed upon the earth,
    and not hand him over
    to the will of his enemies.

Long Live the Pope!

Long live the Pope! His praises sound Again and yet again:
His rule is over space and time; His throne the hearts of men:
All hail! the Shepherd King of Rome, The theme of loving song:
Let all the earth his glory sing, And heav'n the strain prolong,
Let all the earth his glory sing, And heav'n the strain prolong.

Beleaguered by the foes of earth, Beset by hosts of hell,
He guards the loyal flock of Christ, A watchful sentinel:
And yet, amid the din and strife, The clash of mace and sword,
He bears alone the shepherd staff, This champion of the Lord,
He bears alone the shepherd staff, This champion of the Lord,

His signet is the Fisherman's; No sceptre does he bear;
In meek and lowly majesty He rules from Peter's Chair:
And yet from ev'ry tribe and tongue, From ev'ry clime and zone,
Nine hundred million voices sing The glory of his throne,
Nine hundred million voices sing The glory of his throne,

Then raise the chant, with heart and voice, In church and school and home:
"Long live the Shepherd of the Flock! Long live the Pope of Rome!"
Almighty Father, bless his work, Protect him in his ways,
Receive his prayers, fulfill his hopes, And grant him "length of days,"
Receive his prayers, fulfill his hopes, And grant him "length of days."

Tu es Petrus

Tu es Petrus,
et super hanc petrum
ædificábo
Ecclésiam meam.

You are Peter,
and upon this rock
I shall build
my Church.

The Church's One Foundation

The Church's one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is his new creation By water and the Word.
From heav'n he came and sought her To be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her, And for her life he died.

Elect from ev'ry nation, Yet one o'er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses, With ev'ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder Men see her sore opprest,
By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distrest;
Yet saints their watch are keeping, Their cry goes up, "How long?"
And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song.

'Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore,
Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union With God, the Three-in-One,
And mystic, sweet communion With those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with thee.

Jesus, my Lord, my God, my All!

Jesus, my Lord, my God, my all!
How can I love thee as I ought?
And how revere this wondrous gift
So far surpassing hope or thought?

Refrain:

Sweet Sacrament, we thee adore!
Oh, make us love thee more and more;
Oh, make us ove thee more and more.

Had I but Mary's sinless heart
With which to love thee, dearest King,
O with what bursts of fervent praise,
Thy goodness, Jesus, would I sing!  (Refrain)

Thy body, soul and Godhead, all!
O mystery of love divine!
I cannot compass all I have,
For all thou hast and art is mine!  (Refrain)

Sound, then, his praises higher still,
And come, ye angels, to our aid;
For this is God, the very God
Who has both men and angels made!  (Refrain)

Thou art with us, O dearest Lord,
Ever our guest and food to be;
Strengthen the faith of loving hearts
Who put their hope and trust in thee.  (Refrain)

Jesus, dear Pastor of the flock,
We crowd in love about thy feet;
Our voices yearn to praise thee, Lord,
And joyfully thy presence greet.  (Refrain)

Ætérna fac cum sanctis tuis in glória numerári.
Salvum fac pópulum tuum Dómine, et bénedic hereditáti tuæ.
Et rege eos, et extóle illos usque in ætérnum.
Per síngulos dies, benedícimus te.
Et laudámus nomen tuum in sæculum, et in sæculum sæculi.
Dignáre Dómine die isto sine peccáto nos custodíre.
Miserére nostri Dómine, miserére nostri.
Fiat misericórdia tua Dómine super nos, quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
In te Dómine sperávit: non confúndar in ætérnum.

We praise you, O God; we profess you to be the Lord.
All the earth worships you, eternal Father.
To you all the angels, to you the Heavens and all the Powers,
to you the Cherubim and Seraphim cry out with unceasing voices:
"Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts,
heaven and earth are full of your majestic glory."
The glorious choir of the Apostles,
the admirable number of the Prophets,
the white-robed army of the Martyrs praise you.
The holy Church throughout the world does confess you,
the Father of boundless majesty,
your adorable, true and only Son,
and the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
You, O Christ, are the King of glory,
you are the everlasting Son of the Father.
You, when you were to become man to deliver mankind, did not spurn the Virgin's womb.
You, having overcome the sting of death, opened to believers the Kingdom of Heaven.
You sit at the right hand of the God in the glory of the Father.
You, we believe, are the Judge to come.
We beseech you, therefore, to help your servants, whom you have redeemed with your precious blood.
Make them to be numbered with your saints in eternal glory.
Save, O Lord, your people and bless your inheritance.
And govern them and exalt them forever.
Day by day we bless you.
And we praise your Name forever, for all eternity.
Grant, O Lord, this day to keep us without sin.
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.
May your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have placed all our trust in you.
In you, O Lord, I have hoped; let me not be lost forever.

Some of you have asked for a general discussion of liturgical music. That might be appropriate here, if you'd like.

The Handel Te Deums are works of unearthly splendor. Handel has an unsurpassed gift for matching the music to the words' sense -- such as in the anthem "To You cherubim and seraphim continually do cry, 'Holy, Holy, Holy...'"

Are you finished with summer hiatus too or do you sing all summer?

It's so nice to be back at choir.
