Actually Reg. I was posting some information from Apple about their first foray into 64 bit architecture for desktop computers because of your stated interest in the latest processors.

Can you even buy a desktop with either the Xeon or Opteron?

Here is a link with some head to head comparisons between the Xeon and the Opteron Tom's Hardware. I can't vouch for the conclusions but it seems the Xeon is faster than Opteron in workstation (as opposed to server) tasks. Of course I wouldn't be surprised to find you've given away much (if not all) of your price advantage over the Mac in either instance. Both the G5 and the Opteron seem to have an advantage over the Xeon in that they handle legacy 32bit code natively rather than through emulation.
