The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.
Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |

I understand what you are saying but do you have to call them liars? Most of these issues have been beaten to death over the last few years of my participation here. There is literally no amount of facts that will move some of them. So yes, calling them liars is appropriate. I think I'm showing restraint by not using the language Jesus would have used with them, though I have from time to time done so. It is appropriate to label things for what they are. Or would you call the thief walking through your house toward the front door with a bag full of your possessions an "alleged perpetrator" appearing to care for your goods while in your home. The reason these guys are so deluded is because people stand by and let this stuff happen and don't call it what it is and don't keep their leaders' feet to the fire to keep them honest. Beyond that, you should ask some of the long time NCs here about who I am. You'll find I'm the one of the closest things to kryptonite to these guys. They've spent a vast amount of time in the past trying to find a way to marginalize me, shut me up or otherwise get rid of me. And I've long since understood from the spirit that these guys will not be affected - so my message is for the lurkers. And I generally do well with the lurkers.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Mack, even if I continue to be the proverbial thorn in your side! ;o)
angelo, until you understand and accept this you will always have problems with Christ being God.
I think really what I have the most problem with is the idea of God literally becoming man. As we have discussed earlier, if we look at the Word on the level of being mediator between God and man, I have no problem with it. Likewise, the idea of Jesus being the messiah is not an insurmountable problem. It is the "Word made flesh" -- literally made flesh in the person of Jesus -- of a man literally being God -- that is the obstacle for me.
In other words, God saved on credit in the Old Testament.
Okay.
Then, if I understand correctly, people who lived and died before Jesus could be saved "on credit" without knowing or believing in Jesus, but that those who lived after Jesus can only be saved if they believe in him? If God is not a respecter of persons, then why would He hold some to a different standard for salvation?
He is speaking of the nation of Israel being saved, not individual people.
What about the other passages I quoted, which do seem to be more clearly about individual salvation?

The Bible is, as we say, the deposit of faith, the earth out of which faith grows. But if there is anything that is clear, the Scriptures were written down anonymously for the most part, by the disciples or Christ or their disciples, and only gradually collected over a period of two centures. The vast majority of Christians never owned, never saw, and probably never heard the whole book. What part they heard was in Church and always as interpreted by clerics. What they heard was never separated from the rest of tradition--that which was handed down from the first believers. The divisions in the Church, which were there from the earliest days, were always about what it was that was handed down. So if the Scriptures are a touchstone, they are also and always part of the debate. What WAS Scripture? What about Hebrews, what about Revelations, what about James, etc. What about Gospels other than the Four?

Break time over I see :'). Well, krypto, I don't have any problems with what you are saying except that I still don't like the "liar" name calling. You have to know something isn't true in order to lie don't you? Your way is just not my way. You can preach the message but you can't make someone accept it.

PS, there is not one scripture in the Bible that says the angels can sing, I guess it's a human trait only. There is one reference in the Prayer of Azariah, which Catholic bibles place within the Book of Daniel, but which NC bibles consider apocryphal.
What are the creatures in Revelation 4, if not angels?

I didn't say that Luther was a rabbinical scholar, only that he limited Christianity to what he could find in the Bible. That is what he had left after he repudiated pope, council and bishops. To him, as to the Jew and Muslims, Christianity became a religion of the Book. You do realize that Judaism has an entire body of "oral Torah"?

Of course, any effect is going to be marginal.

a calf, a lion, an eagle and a man? Think the eagle could represent the U.S.? Its Revelation, so I have no idea. Reminds me somehwat, though, of the creatures described in Ezekiel 1. Also, it is the seraphim who say "holy, holy, holy" in Isaiah 6:3.

The Reformation was primarily a rejection of the sacerdotal authority of the Catholic priesthood and the long discussion that had been carried on under their government. It began an entirely new discussion based on a new theory of grace and centering on the text of the Bible. Their clerics were no longer priests but scribes, expounders of a book that could now physically be put into the hands of any believer literate in his own language. In their temples, the pulpit takes the place of the altar, and the Bible becomes the central icon.
