Daily Readings from the USCCB

The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls)

Jesus said to the crowds: “Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day.” John 6:37–39

Today we do more than remember our loved ones who have gone before us in death. We listen intently as Jesus assures us: “I will not reject anyone who comes to me” and “I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day.” On this sacred day, we commemorate all the faithful departed, those whom Christ receives, preserves, and raises to eternal life.

A common tendency today is to canonize the dead, assuming that all who have died are now in Heaven. But the stark truth is that eternal life is promised only to those who, in this life, come to Jesus, accept His gift of salvation, and surrender themselves fully to Him.

To do so is to imitate Christ, who came “not to do [His] own will but the will of the one who sent [Him].” Only those who conform their lives to the will of the Father will inherit eternal life. Being a good or kind person is salvific only when that goodness flows from a living union with Christ, manifesting in obedient love and the fulfillment of God’s mission in our lives.

Today is also a day of prayer for the faithful departed. Why do we pray for them? Because entrance into the Beatific Vision requires complete purification from all sin and every attachment to sin, even the smallest imperfection. Nothing impure shall enter the presence of God.

Though God alone judges the soul, the mystical tradition of the Church—found in Scripture and deepened by the saints—teaches that holiness comes through a painful but necessary process of purification. Saint John of the Cross, the great mystical Doctor of the Church, described this process in two stages: the Dark Night of the Senses and the Dark Night of the Spirit.

The Dark Night of the Senses is the painful detachment from all inordinate sensory appetites and earthly loves. It is the reorientation of one’s desires so that only God and His will remain as the true object of love. This transformation, though freeing, can be spiritually painful, as it involves a deep letting go of all that is not of God.

Once the soul passes through this first night, it enters the Illuminative Way, marked by ongoing contemplative union with God, attentiveness to His voice, and docility to His grace.

Reflect today on your own journey of perfection. Have you surrendered completely to the will of the Father? Do you live each day in spiritual union with Christ? Pray also for the souls of the faithful departed, that their purification in Purgatory may be complete and they may soon gaze upon the face of God, so that Jesus will raise them on the last day.

Most Holy and Triune God, You are Perfection, Holiness, Goodness, and Life itself. All who live the new life of grace live in You and by You alone. I pray today for all the faithful departed who have gone before me. Purify them of every attachment, that they may be free to enter fully into Your Beatific Vision. I also offer You my life this day. Grant me the grace to walk faithfully the path of purification in this life, so that I may dwell with You forever in the life to come. Jesus, I trust in You.

Please read the Bible and reflect on the difference in what it says and what your Pope has you doing!
