Leo XIV promotes Bishop García Macías, who fought the traditional Mass but promoted the Mayan liturgy in Mexico.
Today, Pope Leo XIV appointed Spanish Bishop Aurelio García Macías, 61, as Secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship. He is succeeding Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, who has been appointed Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica.
García Macías is former rector of the seminary of Valladolid. A career man, with a gentle and courteous manner, like Monsignor Viola, he too was formed liturgically at Sant’Anselmo.
In 2021, Francis appointed García Macías Undersecretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and, unusually for that position, simultaneously elevated him to the episcopate.
García Macías became a close friend of Archbishop Piero Marini, the former papal master of ceremonies and a prominent figure associated with the postconciliar liturgical reform.
La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana identified García Macías in 2023 as part of a group of Vatican liturgists waging a campaign against the traditional Roman Rite (the “Sant’Anselmo clique”).
He worked closely with Cardinal Arthur Roche and Archbishop Viola during the implementation of Francis’s restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass.
García Macías has publicly defended the principles of Traditionis custodes.
In a January 2022 interview with Galilea.153, he repeated Francis’s assertion that the Novus Ordo constitutes the sole expression of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite.
In May 2024, Paix Liturgique described him as theoretically responsible for traditional Catholics but added that he knew virtually nothing about them and didn't even make any effort to understand them.
García Macías was involved in the controversial Mayan liturgical adaptations in Mexico. In February 2023, he personally visited Chiapas to examine proposals for incorporating indigenous customs into the Novus Ordo.
In March 2023, he told Vida Nueva, "Now a new stage begins: adapting certain aspects of cultures so that they can enter into the liturgical celebration of the Roman Rite."
Cardinal Felipe Arizmendi later revealed that García Macías attended local celebrations and became convinced that the proposals complied with Church norms. “This was a notable advance and opened the way in Rome,” the cardinal told Vida Nueva in November 2024.
Furthermore, García Macías participated in the Second Meeting on Liturgical Translations and Adaptations, held in Mexico from 23 to 27 March 2026.

Baptizing pagan customs to replace their meaning to point to Jesus has been part of missionary outreach since the time of St Gregory the Great who sent missionaries to convert the Anglo Saxons.
Distorting worship services to include pagan beliefs is not the same thing
