Pope Leo XIV has approved the radically pro-LGBT Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as dean of the College of Cardinals.
The election of Tagle, who has been called the “Philippine Pope Francis,” was announced Friday by the Vatican press. He replaces Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re in the role presiding over the College of Cardinals.
As dean of the College, he will supervise meetings of the cardinals and help coordinate any papal transition during his lifetime.
Tagle is compared to Pope Francis in part because of his heterodox track record. He participated in the Pachamama ritual in the Vatican Gardens in 2019, has promoted a “Synodal Church,” and suggested that couples living in adultery may receive Holy Communion when he denied that there is a “formula for all” on upholding the Church’s prohibition of Holy Communion for the divorced and “remarried.”
The cardinal has also broken with Church teaching on the topic of sex. A video promoting homosexuality and transgenderism was produced under his leadership in 2017.

In 2015, in the context of the Extraordinary Synod on the Family, the cardinal suggested that the “harsh” and “severe” stance adopted by the Catholic clerics towards homosexuals and divorced Catholics who have “remarried” has done harm and that the Church must adapt to a “contemporary mindset.”
“We have to admit that this whole spirituality, this growth in mercy and the implementation of the virtue of mercy is something that we need to learn over and over again,” he said in a March 2015 interview with the Daily Telegraph.
He has suggested that contraception may be allowed in certain cases, stating “particular cases must be addressed individually, and they must be brought to the confessors, and the confessors must bring with them hearts of compassion and understanding as they evaluate particular situations and cases. There he was able to blend fidelity to teaching, and at the same time, seeing how individual cases are unique.”
Tagle has defended the Vatican-China agreement in 2022. He whitewashed the persecution of Christians in China and the Vatican’s continued refusal to acknowledge the plight of Catholics in the region, claiming that the deal on episcopal appointments was necessary to ensure apostolic succession and that Chinese Catholics were grateful to Rome for granting Communists the power to name its pastors.
“With the [Sino-Vatican] Agreement attempts are made to ensure that Chinese Catholic bishops can exercise their episcopal task in full communion with the Pope,” claimed Tagle, adding that the “reason for everything is to safeguard the valid apostolic succession and the sacramental nature of the Catholic Church in China. And this can reassure, comfort, and enliven baptized Catholics in China.”
