The Holy See this week confirmed that the now-deceased founder of the Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE), whose work was supported by then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, was guilty “of acts constituting an offence against the sixth commandment, committed with violence against several people.”
Ecclesiastical tribunals “reached moral certainty regarding the responsibility of Fr. Carlos Miguel Buela,” founder of both IVE and its female counterpart, the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará (SSVM), according to a Vatican statement.
Argentine Father Carlos Miguel Buela, who died in 2023, had long been under suspicion of alleged sexual abuse of seminarians.
The first allegations against the founder emerged in the 1990s, according to Rome Reports. The Vatican removed Buela from leadership in 2010, and he was first convicted in 2021.
In 2020, a Washington Post investigation found that from 2004 to 2017, then-Cardinal McCarrick sent IVE dozens of checks — some as large as $50,000 — from an Archdiocese of Washington account under his control.
“During those years, Carlos Buela, who founded the group decades ago in Argentina, repeatedly defied Vatican sanctions for alleged sexual misconduct with seminarians, according to a confidential Vatican order,” the Post reported, adding that “(t)he group ‘systematically obstructed’ Vatican efforts to oversee its activities.”
A Post examination further found that the financial and personal ties between McCarrick and Buela’s group “were far more extensive than previously known.” The examination revealed “a highly unusual flow of money from one accused church leader to a group led by another.”
The Vatican’s statement notes that its “clarification is intended to help re-establish the truth, as an act of justice towards those who have suffered harm as a result of the conduct of the priest Carlos Miguel Buela, as well as to ensure that members of both Institutes are duly informed and to support the process of re-examining the charism and reviewing, renewing and purifying the spirituality, formation and apostolate proper to each Institute, distinguishing between the gift of the Spirit bestowed for the building up of the Church and the Founder’s limitations or personal conduct.”
Buela founded the Institute of the Incarnate Word in Mendoza, Argentina, in 1984. In the years since, IVE and SSVM have spread to 45 countries across five continents.
