Psalm 34[a][b]

Of David. When he pretended to be insane before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

1  I will extol the Lord at all times;

    his praise will always be on my lips.

2  I will glory in the Lord;

let the afflicted hear and rejoice.

3  Glorify the Lord with me;

let us exalt his name together.

4  I sought the Lord, and he answered me;

    he delivered me from all my fears.

5  Those who look to him are radiant;

their faces are never covered with shame.

6  This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;

he saved him out of all his troubles.

7  The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,

and he delivers them.

8  Taste and see that the Lord is good;

blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

9  Fear the Lord, you his holy people,

for those who fear him lack nothing.

10  The lions may grow weak and hungry,

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11  Come, my children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12  Whoever of you loves life

    and desires to see many good days,

13  keep your tongue from evil

and your lips from telling lies.

14  Turn from evil and do good;
    seek peace and pursue it.

15  The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

and his ears are attentive to their cry;

16  but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil,

to blot out their name from the earth.

17  The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;

he delivers them from all their troubles.

18  The Lord is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

19  The righteous person may have many troubles,

but the Lord delivers him from them all;

20  he protects all his bones,

not one of them will be broken.

21  Evil will slay the wicked;

the foes of the righteous will be condemned.

22  The Lord will rescue his servants;

no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

As usual, the Media has transformed a typical New England Autumn Storm into The Zombie Apocalypse. Last night, the grocery stores and gas stations were jammed with people, stocking up on food and gas, in response to panicky announcements on TV and Social Media. People scrambled to bring in their lawn furniture, and it was "Batten Down The Hatches" all over town.

Yet, my sister and her friends went to an outdoor concert on the Waterfront in Boston, and, as far as I've heard, the tent didn't collapse and the concert-goers weren't drowned in Boston Harbor. I still have Electricity and Internet, even though my cell phone is ringing every minute with another DIRE WARNING. Yes, it's raining. Yes, it's windy. Yes, my weekend of breezy Motorcycling through the best part of a New England Autumn has been curtailed. I may even lose Electricity for a few hours, and maybe a tree or two will come down. But that's New England. I'd still prefer this to the Florida Hurricane Season of 2005 (Katrina, Ivan, Rita, Wilma, et al), and at least it's not snow...yet.

I don't mean to sound flippant, and I do empathize with folks who live in flood zones, but, really, the Media has gone all-out to foster Fear and Anguish among the population, especially the older people. Every weather event is a "crisis", and the GOVERNMENT touts itself as the only refuge for the suffering, endangered, masses. Of course we need to behave responsibly. Of course we shouldn't pick up live wires in the street. Of course we should have enough food and toilet paper, batteries and gas, to get through a day or two without electricity. (I went FIVE WEEKS without it after Wilma).

The Media isn't providing a Public Service with all this Panic and Hyperbole. It is my impression (yours may differ) that they are trying to ramp up Fear, Anxiety, and Confusion, so as to maintain control over a terrified people. Fear is a Great Manipulator. A terrified population is a malleable population. "Peace and Safety" are way up there on the "Hierarchy of Needs".

In a previous Psalm, we saw an aspect of David's Personality that wasn't at all attractive. One of our readers called it "Braggadocio", and I agreed. But what looks like "braggadocio" on the outside can be a coverup for deep, paralyzing, FEAR.

Lack of fear isn't human. We all have instincts of self-preservation that are built-in by Our Creator to get along in this dangerous world. But, when those instincts get out-of-whack and consume a person with fear, the results are devastating. Ulcers, Panic Attacks, Strokes, Hypertension, and Digestive Issues can all be traced to Anxiety and unresolved FEAR. Many Mental Health issues find their source there too.

David had a lot to be "afraid" of. As a Shepherd Boy, he dealt with Wild Animals that could ravage the flock. As a Servant to King Saul, he was in danger of the king's wrath. As a Warrior, he was confronted with Combat and Death from his enemies. As a father, he was threatened by his own son. If he DID'T have fear he would have been a complete idiot!

It's not the fear that harms us, it's what we do with it. Do we give in to it and become a miserable wreck? Do we try to cover it up with braggadocio? Do we ignore it and do crazy acts of fake courage and get ourselves and our loved ones killed in the process?

Psalm 34 gives us a way out. In fact, it is THE way out. David turns to God, Who delivers him from his fears. he is then given the real courage he needs to function in a crisis.

Seek the LORD.
He WILL Hear You,
And Deliver You From Your Fears.
