Archbishop Renzo Pegoraro, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, claims that Catholics could morally assent to a law permitting assisted suicide in Italy.
Speaking to the Italian bishops’ newspaper Avvenire.it on September 6, he said: “From the Catholic side, it is a matter of assessing whether we will be faced with an ‘imperfect law’, to which it would nevertheless be moral to give one’s assent, in view of the fact that more permissive and libertarian laws could otherwise quickly be approved in Parliament, laws far more harmful to the dignity of the sick person and the value of life.”
Leo XIV appointed Archbishop Pegoraro as President of the Pontifical Academy for Life on May 27, 2025. For a decade, he had already drawn attention for serious deviations from Catholic doctrine on matters of life, including statements that contraception might be morally permissible under certain circumstances.
On March 25, 2026, Leo XIV appointed Pegoraro a titular bishop and gave him the personal title of Archbishop. He was consecrated a bishop in June 2026.
“Lesser Evil” Cannot Legitimize an Intrinsic Evil
In Evangelium vitae §73, John Paul II taught that it is never licit to vote for a law that permits abortion or euthanasia. He permitted a legislator to support a more restrictive law only to limit the harm of a more permissive legal regime already in force.
By contrast, Monsignor Pegoraro suggests that Catholics might morally “give their assent” to a new law allowing assisted suicide. His wrong excuse is that potentially worse legislation could otherwise be adopted in the future.

The Third prediction from Mary the Mother of our Lord at Fatima that the church has hidden for a century. We are living in a period of an apostate takeover of the Catholic Church. Holy Cardinals and Bishops and Priests must speak up and Jesus is waiting to see who will and who will not Shepard the Church through these synodal evils being spread by false religious clerics.
