Indian Catholics remain jailed for defending parish from Hindu mob during Mass

A group of Catholics in India have been jailed for three months and were denied bail again this week after trying to stop Hindu activists from disrupting Holy Mass.

Ten Catholics from the Bandaria parish in the Indian Diocese of Udaipur were denied bail again this week and remain incarcerated three months after being arrested and charged with wrongful restraint, illegal conversion, rioting, attempted murder, and breach of peace, after defending their Mass site from a group of Hindus who forced their way inside during Mass.

Father Arvind Amliyar, the pastor of Bandaria parish, in the Rajasthan state, told UCA News that the 10 faithful were denied bail again on August 6. Back in May, these Catholics tried to stop a mob of 13 Hindu activists, who accused the faithful of attempting to “convert” the local population, from forcing their way into the parish substation and disrupting the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

After a scuffle ensued, the Hindu activists stood outside the police station, demanding that the parishioners be charged. While the Catholics also attempted to file a formal complaint at the police station, they refused to accept it and ultimately charged the parishioners.

“We are disappointed,” Fr. Amliyar told UCA News. “It is very unfortunate that our people are languishing in prison for over three months.”

Bishop Devprasad John Ganawa of Udaipur stressed that if the police continue to act partially toward the Hindus, “every Christian praying in a church can be accused of religious conversion and put behind bars.”

The denial of bail comes just months after a series of new laws in India aimed at discouraging religious conversion, laws that many say are being used to indiscriminately jail Catholics.

In March, bills were passed in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, which aimed to stop alleged “forced” conversions by Church officials.

Catholic bishops previously emphasized that the new bills risk promoting “suspicion, division, and injustice.”

“The law appears to disproportionately affect minority communities, raising serious concerns about both its intent and its implementation,” noted the bishops.

In 2025, two Catholic nuns were also arrested in India for supposedly forcing conversion on three female acquaintances. The charges are denied not only by Church leaders but also contradicted by official documents.

Any word from Pope Leo on this? Or is he too busy blessing blocks of ice?

Also Nathaniel/Bartholomew. One worked the east coast of India, one worked the west coast.

That white bubble is a block of ice. Leo is blessing it for some bizarre reason.
