Chicago’s Pastoral Canonization
On June 26, the Archdiocese of Chicago dedicated a memorial called At Peace near the main entrance of Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. The memorial offers families affected by suicide a place for prayer, remembrance, and mourning. Bishop Lawrence Sullivan described it as a visible sign that grieving families remain within God’s loving care. Those aims are humane and thoroughly compatible with Catholic charity.
Then the archdiocesan announcement crossed a line which Catholic theology has always approached with fear and trembling.
It declared that the Church now “affirms that they are with God, not condemned.” Father Charles Rubey, whose work inspired the memorial, repeated the assurance: the shrine shows survivors that their deceased loved ones “are with God.”
That is no longer a call to pray for the dead. It amounts to a pastoral canonization of an entire class of deceased persons.

A Lutheran pastor may receive the keys to a Catholic church. A Catholic priest trained in the inherited Roman Rite needs authorization to approach a parish altar. The Lutheran service belongs to an approved ecumenical relationship. The Mass of countless saints belongs to an exceptional group whose continued existence Rome intends to curtail.
This arrangement identifies the postconciliar hierarchy’s practical understanding of religious danger. Lutheran worship inside a Catholic sanctuary presents an opportunity for dialogue. The ancient Roman Mass presents an ecclesial threat.
The decisive issue is allegiance to the postconciliar settlement.
The Pope is too intelligent not to know that's what he's doing.
Catholics think that the Pope has the authority from Jesus to declare things sins or not.
Suicide is the easy way to heaven in theory. I hold the belief and will state that the Bible doesn’t really cover this, that Suicide is an unrepentant murder and therefore excludes one from heaven.
Suicide is an unrepentant murder and therefore excludes one from heaven....yes
I have been taught that my whole life. Now the pope thinks differently?
Who is he to change God’s law?
The Church removed the stigma surrounding suicide a few decades ago. Their view is that if a person is not in their right mind due to depression, mental illness, or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they cannot be held responsible for their decision to end their life. That’s the compassionate church at work. Now if it’s a Jack Kevorkian type thing or the MAID act, that’s a whole ‘nother thing.
My sister and one son converted to Catholicism and are die hard Catholic now. My husband says it’s a cult. This Pope is even worse than the last Pope and he was awful. We are Lutheran - Catholic Lite - all of the Grace - less guilt. I couldn’t tell you who our Bishop is, it makes no difference to me. I believe the way I was taught 55 years ago when the world was more sane. No church official with today’s mind set is going to change the way I believe. Jesus is my Lord and Savior. Through him and God’s Grace, I am saved.
..they cannot be held responsible for their decision to end their life...
That is something. Most suicides are done by selfish people.
They don’t consider what damage they cause to their family and friends. There is a huge ripple effect to that.
I know because I have experienced it.
Candace Owens is a so called Catholic, enough said
Martin Luther felt the same way. That in rare cases, a suicide was not in his right mind and thus forgiven.
Martin Luther believed some suicides were not in their right mind and thus forgiven.
Some suicides have no family or friends, no ripple behind them. And thus not selfish, according to you.
All of the negative news you're going to post about a wayward priest or bishop will not negate the disobedience of the SSPX priests and bishops.
Not!
Get a little defensive of your synodal "church".
Blaming the SSPX for all the heresies of the Big Tent with your lies.
