The president of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, Italian Bishop Antonio Staglianò, who was appointed by Pope Francis, created a stir recently via a viral video on Instagram.
In the video, Staglianò opined that John Lennon’s famous/infamous pacifist song Imagine is the most beautiful song in the world.
Imagine that.
Staglianò actually stated, “Let’s abolish religion, let’s abolish God, let’s abolish heaven. Who says that? John Lennon, in the most beautiful song in the world, Imagine.”
The bishop made his remarks in the context of asserting that no religion — and therefore no concept, idea, or principle — should be worth killing or dying for.
Per lifesitenews.com, he concluded his remarks by stating his own interpretation of the Gospel:
“I too, like John Lennon,” Staglianò continued, “do not want a religion for which I must kill or die, I do not want a heaven for which I must kill or die, I do not want a God for whom I must kill or die. And don’t worry – this was said, before John Lennon, two thousand years ago by Jesus of Nazareth.”
AdvertisementStaglianò concluded by stating his interpretation of the Gospel: “Standing before the High Priest, Jesus said: Get it out of your head that my Abba, my God, my Father killed the firstborn sons of Egypt or the charioteers and horses of the Egyptian army, or that He ordered Saul to put prisoners to the sword… Get it out of your head, because my Abba is always and only love. With my Abba you can only make peace, reconciliation, forgiveness.”
A Catholic bishop, president of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, touting a song whose lyrics read “Imagine there’s no heaven” as the most beautiful in the world seems to me to be a tad heretical.

JOHN LENNON’s IMAGINE:
[Verse 1]
Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
[Verse 2]
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
[Chorus]
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
[Verse 3]
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
He is slathering ‘love’ on this song, mostly because the lyrics can be read as a sincere Ode to Socialism + Collectivism.
Further evidence that the roman catholic church is corrupted.
I am a bit ambivalent about the song, it doesn’t bother me much. But it obviously is a Commie theme song that has no connection to reality or human nature.
Perhaps Bishop Stagliano has spent some years as a Jesuit Priest. This is how most of them are taught to think.
What a cloying, egotistical song. I don’t even think Lennon liked it a few years later.
The fool says in his heart, there is no God.
The church janitor who knows God is greater than Bishop Antonio Staglianò, who evidently is a fool—and I say that with fear and trepidation, because Jesus says that calling a brother in the faith a fool places me in danger of hell fire.
There was a long time, where when someone converted to Catholicism, they knew they would die an unnatural death.
The Catholic Church cannot be corrupt, because it is the Body of Christ. We have this on the authority of Jesus himself in the Sacred Scriptures.
But just like a human body, members can be corrupted. This is what we see. However no member or members, high or low, stupid or ignorant, can destroy Christ's Church. Over 2000 years many have predicted her demise and many have tried to destroy her (even bishops and priests) but the Church has buried them all. We also have this on the authority of Jesus himself in the Sacred Scriptures: The gates of hell will not prevail against her. Amen.
Imagine there’s no Commies.
Its easy if you try....
Wait a minute.
Does this even BELIEVE in God?
What does he think Jesus meant by saying “Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division”.
As not a catholic I believe that the head of the church can be corrupted so I’ll agree to disagree. The Mormons are worse but they don’t have a pontiff. That’s a joke :D
I’m not very religious, havang seen too much of the dark side of it. “You’re going to hell for that”, God will punish you for that” ad nauseam my first seven years.
I do remember that beautiful song by the Beatles, thought the very first time I heard it that it was not only beautiful but had greater spiritual inspiration and meaning than the control system I was raised in.
And here I am at almost 90 thanking God for creating ao much beauty in the world. Imagine that.
Commie song.
Applaius for best post here.
Say what you will, but the guy certainly has eclectic musical tastes!

Regards,
I never liked much of what The Beatles produced starting with Sgt. Pepper and never liked anything they did solo .
One of the absolute worst.
