[Catholic Caucus] Pope’s prayer intention for June: for the values of sports

Pope Leo XIV’s prayer intention for June 2026 is “let us pray that sports be an instrument of peace, encounter, and dialogue among cultures and nations, and that they promote values such as respect, solidarity, and personal growth.”

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, which disseminates the monthly papal prayer intention, will release the video associated with the intention tomorrow, according to the network’s YouTube channel, The Pope Video.

TOPICS: Catholic; Prayer
KEYWORDS: communism; corny; justnocompetition; secular; solidarity
Traditional Catholic monthly devotions are centuries-old customs where the Church assigns a specific spiritual theme to each month. These focal points encourage the faithful to structure their prayer lives around particular mysteries of Christ, the Blessed Mother, or the Saints to deepen their spiritual growth.

June: The Sacred Heart of Jesus Focuses on the physical heart of Jesus as a symbol of His boundless, redeeming love and mercy for humanity, not to "promote values such as respect, solidarity, and personal growth.”

To be fair, the traditional devotion for the month is a separate thing from the Pope's changeable monthly special intentions which are not to supplant each month' traditional devotion, but only reflect each Pope's particular intention for that month to be offered to the faithful as a focus of prayer. Every Pope has done this for as long as I can remember. It began in 1879 when Pope Leo XIII introduced it as part of the Apostleship of Prayer.

But sports? Really?

If anybody needs prayers, it's the wide world of sports. All of the "gender" confusion, exploitation of talented kids by ambitious parents, misusing sports to make political statements, and greedy club ownership (all things people in these forums complain about all the time), there's a lot to pray for. I think it's too much to ask in one month out of this single year of 2026 to spare a prayer for sports.
