Catholics in Indonesia have offered sacrificial animals to Muslims ahead of the Eid al-Adha festival as an expression of interfaith solidarity, local sources say.
From the national capital Jakarta to Christian strongholds in eastern Indonesia, Catholic individuals and Church-based groups donated cows and goats to mostly needy Muslims ahead of the festival held on May 27.
During the festival, millions of Muslims across the world slaughter animals and share meat with others, including relatives and poor people, as a mark of solidarity.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Jakarta offered sacrificial animals to the Istiqlal Mosque, one of Southeast Asia’s largest, located just opposite the Church. The mosque also received animals from other donors, including government officials.
The mosque’s Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar, who is also the Minister of Religious Affairs, said such contributions are part of “a culture of sharing.”
“We encourage anyone, regardless of religion, to take part in sharing, especially during Eid al-Adha, because it is a moment when social assistance through meat distribution is most meaningful,” he said.
St. Theresia Parish in Central Jakarta donated two cows on May 26 to Muslim communities in Karet Tengsin and Tanah Abang.
Parish priest Jesuit Father Benny Beatus Wetty said the initiative stems from long-held interfaith harmony and mutual respect.
“Joint activities built in a spirit of tolerance, fraternity and respect for diversity must continue to be maintained,” he said while handing over animals to Ustaz Harun Al Rasyid, a representative of the Ijtihad Mosque, in the presence of members of the parish council.
Cheppy Wartono, head of the parish’s interfaith relations section, said charity and solidarity are common in all major religions.
“Humanity is one of the core purposes of religious life,” Wartono said.
Local Muslim leader Ustaz Babay said the parish has supported the Muslim community for years and contributed to a strong interfaith relationship.
“This is already the sixth time we have received such a donation,” he said.
Similar animal donations were made in other areas, including at Labuan Bajo on Flores island in Christian-majority East Nusa Tenggara province.
Bishop Maksimus Regus of Labuan Bajo delivered a cow to the Al-Munawwarah Terang Grand Mosque.
During the handover ceremony, the bishop and other Catholics were greeted by a reception featuring traditional Manggarai customs in the presence of Muslim leaders and government officials.
“We bring a gift in the form of a sacrificial animal as a sign of brotherhood and support for Muslim families,” the bishop said.
Ruslin, imam of the Al-Munawwarah mosque, said the gesture was meaningful.
“The bishop’s presence strengthens us as Muslims preparing for the sacrifice, and at the same time affirms our togetherness with Catholic families who have long lived in harmony here,” he said.
About 87 percent of Indonesia’s estimated 280 million people are Muslims, and Christians account for about 10 percent, according to official data.
During this year’s Eid al-Adha, about 2.36 million animals were slated to be slaughtered, the Ministry of Agriculture estimated.

So much for the Synodal "Church"'s Great Commission:
18 And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. 19 Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.
It’s no good to suck up they’ll cut your throat the first chance they get
There are 17,000 islands in Indonesia, 6,000 of which are inhabited. 267 million people. We may have a use for them someday.

Lol, “interfaith solidarity”. Just part of the jizya that they have to pay to to the muzzies to live.
Give a "needy" man a cow or a goat to slaughter, and you feed him for a day.
Give him a cow or a goat to provide years of milk and wool, and you feed him for a much longer period of time.
Regards,
What? Why don’t they offer themselves?
