Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops, recently praised the heterodox German “Synodal Way” as inspired by the “Holy Spirit.”
During the annual “Catholics Day” festival and conference, Katholikentag, Grech participated in a roundtable on synodality, a natural fit given his position as leader of the Vatican’s Synod on Synodality.
“Answering the question of whether the (German) Synodal Path had been a source of inspiration for the global synodal process launched in 2021 by Pope Francis, the cardinal replied: ‘I think the inspiration came from the same protagonist: the Holy Spirit,’” SSPX News reported
This is an enormously problematic claim from Grech, because it suggests that the Holy Spirit inspired the heretical proposals of the German “Synodal Path,” including changing Church teaching on homosexuality and “women’s ordination.” At one of the Synodal Way’s assemblies, a large majority voted to approve a text that said that homosexual acts are “not a sin that separates from God.”
The Synod on Synodality has been about as scandalous, as the recently published Study Group No. 9 report said that one homosexual man’s testimony “bears witness to the discovery that sin, at its root, does not consist in the (same-sex) couple relationship, but in a lack of faith in a God who desires our fulfillment.”
At Katholikentag, speaking of Germany, Cardinal Grech said: “I know that the bishops are doing their best to transpose the fruits of the final document of the World Synod to their local Churches.”
“Unfortunately, we are focusing only on Germany, but we must have a broad vision of the Church. There are also other experiences. There are those who need a break, who are slower, but there are others who need a boost,” said Grech. He then called for a “symphony of communion” within the Church, apparently suggesting that these different approaches to Church issues could all be embraced.
“We’ll see,” continued Grech. “We must walk together and, of course, respect each other’s rhythm as much as possible.
“But as for the fastest, they should not be slowed down,” he said, appearing to confirm a belief that the German bishops, who are endorsing a rapid change in Church teaching, should not be stopped.
Grech himself has been responsible for promoting heterodox teaching, most notably by having co-authored with Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta the notorious Maltese bishops’ pastoral guidelines on Amoris Laetitia, which gave access to Holy Communion to divorced and civilly “remarried” Catholics living in sin who “with an informed and enlightened conscience … acknowledge and believe that he or she are at peace with God.” These guidelines were republished by the official Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.
In 2017, Grech “attacked a group of Maltese faithful Catholics” after it defended “real marriage against ‘unnatural’ homosexual ‘marriage’” in a full-page ad in a widely-read paper. The bishop called the ad “propaganda.” He has also accused opponents of these guidelines of having “attitudes” that “annihilate all hope in people,” calling them “prophets of doom.”
