Numbers 21:4-10

5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6 And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Some time in the 1970s, Street Signs were replaced with Pictographs. Restrooms now sported stylized stick figures in a dress or pants to symbolize a Woman or a Man. Never mind that, by the 70s many women also wore pants, but knew enough to go into the appropriate bathroom.

While the restroom signs were fairly obvious, some were not as easy to decipher. One, of a School Bus with a depiction of a flashing red light, looked like a bomb blast. Of course it just meant "STOP WHEN SCHOOL BUS HAS FLASHING RED LIGHTS", but, it looked like something else. I had to analyze the image and translate it into English. This only took a split second, but it could have been enough time for a tragedy to occur.

It seems as though the opposite was going on with Moses and the People of Israel. The Law was given in the Language of the People. It was Written. It took up reams of parchment. I have lifted up a Torah Scroll, and it's HEAVY. Moses not only wrote it down, he recited it. In Deuteronomy we hear him say:

1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. (Deuteronomy 6:1-9)

Moses didn't keep the Word of God in a dark secret place, accessible only to initiates who could decipher its dark secrets. It's not a puzzle that needs to be solved by arcane formulae. It's right out there in the open.

And yet, the People still disobeyed. They went right back into adultery and idolatry.

I'm reminded of a frustrated Dad who exclaims:

"DO I HAVE TO PAINT YOU A PICTURE???"

The "picture" came as fiery serpents with a deadly bite. Why serpents? Well, it was a serpent who seduced Eve in the Garden. The serpent became the symbol for SIN.

The next "Pictograph" is even more puzzling. God tells Moses to make a brass (or bronze) serpent, and hang it up on a pole. The afflicted could look up at this "symbol", and be healed of the deadly snakebite.

Remember, in the Garden, when God cursed the serpent? The serpent is cursed, hung up on a pole, and becomes the source of healing.

This incident in the Old Testament is referenced by both Jesus and Paul as a foreshadowing of the Crucifixion. Jesus became the "Curse" and was hung on a cross. There is a detailed explanation from the Evangelical Perspective on a site called "Got Questions", which is very informative.

The afflicted People looked up at the serpent on the pole, and were healed.

Then, they packed up the bronze serpent, gave it a name (Nehushtan), and started schlepping it around the desert. It would eventually end up in Jerusalem, years later, being worshiped as an idol. (Nooooo!) Finally, King Hezekiah had the thing destroyed.

A lot of symbols and signs become corrupted and become idols. We all need to watch ourselves when it comes to this very human failing.

Now...let's see. I'm wearing jeans today. Even so, and even with the signs, I know which restroom to use. 🚺
