Exodus 20:1- 26

20 And God spake all these words, saying,

2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

22 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.

and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

I'll start today's meditation with a True Story and a Parable. The difference between a Parable and a True Story is that a Parable may or may not be the actual true account of an event. It is something told alongside (para) a reality, to illustrate a point. Jesus told both True Stories and Parables. It's not always easy to tell the difference. If Jesus named the characters in the story, or used the phrase "There was a certain man...", it was likely to be a true story. If, however, Jesus used the words "like unto" or "as", then it was probably a parable. Here's an example:

"The Kingdom of heaven is like a woman kneading yeast into bread dough..." (Parable)

"There once was a certain poor man named Lazarus..."(True Story).

This is a True Story:

A friend of mine from work had tried for years to be a contestant on "JEOPARDY!", and it finally happened. She was a very smart lady, and aced whole categories, driving her score up and looking like she was going to be the new champion. Then, "Final Jeopardy" came up. The category was "OLD TESTAMENT".

Awesome! she mused. I'm a Conservative Jew! I know all about the Old Testament!"

And so, she bet all her winnings on a sure thing.

Here was the clue:

"THESE ARE THE TWO BOOKS OF THE TORAH THAT LIST THE TEN COMMANDMENTS"

She wrote down "Exodus" right away, but had to think a bit about the other Book. Since there are only five Books in the Torah, and she already knew the first one...maybe the second one would have to do with the number ten? OK, so she wrote:

"WHAT ARE EXODUS AND NUMBERS?"

It was wrong, and she lost everything. The correct answer was:

"WHAT ARE EXODUS AND DEUTERONOMY?"

"Deuteronomy means "the second reading", and sure enough, the Ten Commandments are repeated in that Book.

Deuteronomy is written from the perspective of Moses himself, and is a summary of the entire history of the Hebrew People up to that point. While some modern scholars dispute the Torah's authorship, Jesus believed it was Moses, the Book itself says it's by Moses, and Moses had 40 YEARS to write it, so why not? The only part that Moses could not have written was the bit about his death at the very end, and that could have been easily supplied by Moses's Right-Hand-Man, Joshua.

Anyway, if it had been me on the show that night, I would have gotten it right.

And now, for a Parable:

The Apartment Complex allowed pets, but people weren't picking up after their dogs. So the Landlord Posted a sign:

PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG.

People complied, using plastic grocery bags, and deposited them in the Community Barrels. The barrels soon filled up. The landlord posted another sign:

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE COMMUNITY BARREL FOR ANIMAL WASTE.

So now, the Residents used the Dumpster.

Another sign was posted:

PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS ARE NOT RECYCLABLE!
USE ONLY RECYCLABLE BAGS FOR ANIMAL WASTE.

Then:

DO NOT PUT ANIMAL WASTE IN THE DUMPSTER

and, finally:

NO PETS ALLOWED

Most people will look at The Ten Commandments and think "OK, I can handle that. I've never killed anybody, or stolen anything.", but it's not that simple, especially the LAST one. That one about covetousness...how does anybody control THAT? The truth is, we can't. It's like the animal waste in my parable. It just happens. We may think that the People of Israel were given only TEN Commandments, but, in the Bible there are 613 Mitzvaot (Laws).

Even ten are impossible to keep, never mind 613.

In order to keep the 613 Laws, Religious Leaders came up with more regulations to prevent the breaking of them. Religious Systems become more and more complicated till they become a set of impossible rules.

Jesus distilled all of these rules into One Commandment:

"LOVE GOD, and LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF".

"On that," He said, "Hangs all of the Law and The Prophets."
