In the Iran Iraq war there were reports that a man on a white horse inspired young children to charge the Iraqi front lines. They were told it was the Mahdi the Messiah and if they died today they would go straight to paradise. And charge they did. Iraqi soldiers reported getting sick at having to machine gun wave after wave of young children. So the Mahdi may be fictional to us but not to many of them.

A decent observation. But still there is no reason to do other than distrust greatly. This Shia/Sunni things is of great complexity, but behind it all is probably the old love of power and money, and sometimes money and power clothed in "religion." Agree wholeheartedly. My old and now tattered copy of the Koran has informed -- though it's dreadfully dull reading, but with a very interesting foreword by the translator -- and I have some reasonably clear notion of "where they're coming from."
