STUDY: Conversion to Christ among South Asian Muslims in Britain

Thus, to paint a picture: a young Muslim person, distanced from their home and community, meeting and befriending Christians, searching for answers to big questions, open to visiting their places of worship, reading their scriptures, and praying with honesty to God is most likely to end up becoming a follower of Jesus.

Their ‘Journey’ to Christ - PhD A personal quest; a serious reengagement with the Holy Scriptures, both Bible and Qur’an; the importance of having Christian friends and relationships; the crisis of life’s more difficult circumstances; the very real possibility of some sort of supernatural encounter; a greater awareness of the God whose character is love and of the place and significance of Jesus Christ as more than just a mere prophet; the importance of a welcoming Christian community.

Aysha: “My best friend was a Christian from the age of 11 and she was part of the church that I am part of now.”

Yasmin - “I knew that he was having an affair….it was so difficult because I was expected to be this good Muslim wife and turn a blind eye and…I did, I did, I served him well when he came back every three or four months he’d just turn up, and just go again….it was a really hard time.”

Gulalai - “I started to like the stories of the life of Jesus and the way he lived, the way he helped people, and especially his sacrifice for us, what he did for us…. Before converting to Christianity, I would have feared the consequences of converting to Christianity…I decided that the personality of Jesus was more important to me than my relationships, social pressure, and the common people.”

Azra - “I explained everything, and they prayed for me, they just prayed and asked God to come into my life, I felt the Holy Spirit at that time and all of that demonic stuff that I was seeing before that, that tormented me for a whole five years just went, it just literally went…I just slept for the first time in five years like a baby (laughs loudly).”
