JESUS GROWS
INTO ADULTHOOD

M A T T H E W
CHAPTER 2

After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”

So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.

"The painting depicts the young Jesus assisting Joseph in his workshop. Joseph is making a door, which is laid upon his carpentry work-table. Jesus has cut his hand on an exposed nail, symbolizing the stigmata and foreshadowing Jesus' crucifixion. Some of the blood has fallen onto his foot. As Jesus' grandmother, Anne, removes the nail with a pair of pincers, his concerned mother, Mary, offers her cheek for a kiss. Joseph examines Jesus' wounded hand. A young boy, who would later be known as John the Baptist, brings in water to wash the wound, prefiguring his later baptism of Christ. An assistant of Joseph, who represents Jesus' future Apostles, observes these events.

"In the background of the painting various objects are used to further symbolize the theological significance of the subject. A ladder, referring to Jacob's Ladder, leans against the back wall, and a dove which represents the Holy Spirit rests on it. Other carpentry implements refer to the Holy Trinity…The sheep in the sheepfold seen through the door represent the future Christian flock."

I can remember a television add for a collection of prints titled 100 of The World’s Most Beautiful Paintings from many years ago. The commercial was hosted by Sebastian Cabot. Well, I pestered Mom and Dad into ordering it- I don’t remember the price, it might’ve been $19.95. Well, I still have it somewhere, it must be stashed away in a box.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that your #8, the painting by Georges De La Tour, is in there.

As it turns out, my wife had the same collection, except she cut some of the prints out and framed them. We wouldn’t know each other until years later. That collection can still be purchased used, on Amazon.

I checked it out on Amazon. That would have used film photography rather than digital. Doing these threads, I’ve come to desire digital whenever possible.
