CHAPTER 2

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”

These images were as bad as I feared. As bad as any R-rated violent movie I’ve seen.

The close-up scenes were worse than the panorama type.

One unresolved question is, how many boys died? I was in a 600-person church for 16 years and the most babies we had at one time was 7—and half of them were girls. What was the population of Bethlehem at the time?

I’ve seen estimates of the deaths from a dozen to several dozen.

Sounds about right to me. Even just half-a-dozen would have been worthy of note; I am reminded of the tremendous nationwide uproar over the one dismembered concubine chronicled in Judges, and despotic actions by tyrants are always sure to incite.
