GABRIEL'S
AMAZING NEWS
FOR MARY

L U K E
CHAPTER 1

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.”

“I AM THE LORD’S SERVANT,” Mary answered. “MAY IT BE TO ME AS YOU HAVE SAID.” Then the angel left her.

So many great paintings. I like the one from the Bulgarian artist Yanko Janev at #95. He became very well know for depicting the beauty of his Country.

So many gorgeous artworks. I’m rather amused by the “biblically accurate angel” ones. I think the basic presumption can be that they were recognizable as humans. But they are awesome work and I don’t mean to detract from them; if anything I’d like to highlight their uniqueness. By the way, I have gone many times to a mass from an Eastern rite which has been presenting “biblically accurate” angels for centuries, and their take on them is ... interesting.

As you might imagine, and as I can assure you, how artists depict angels has been an oft-discussed topic on these threads through the years, including this week. Of course, few of us have seen an actual angel—I’ve seen only one, and he was in the guise of a normal human—so artists are left guessing, inasmuch as scriptural physical descriptions are both scarce and inconsistent. That suggests to me that great leeway and charity is due them.

I was happy to see Tissot and Dore, two of my favorites. They tend to be very literal.

Dore is of special note for all his illustrations are woodcuts, which is a more difficult medium, in my opinion.

Dore’s Illustrations are wonderful too, and adorn many antique Bibles.
