New York Times best-selling author Lee Strobel shared that Hobby Lobby has purchased half a million copies of his book “The Case for Christmas” to give away at stores.

Once an atheist, the former Chicago Tribune legal editor became a Christian in 1981 after investigating the evidence of Christianity and Jesus’ claims that he is the Son of God.

“People are sending me photos of the Free Gift they received from Hobby Lobby after shopping there—my new book ‘The Case for Christmas,’” Strobel posted on social media. “Hobby Lobby is giving away half a million free copies to customers at their stores! I’m praying God uses them to point people to Himself!”

Strobel originally released “The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger” in 2005, but he released a revised and updated edition this past September.

A summary for the book reads:

Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning? And how can we know for sure? In this completely revised and updated edition of The Case for Christmas—reflecting the latest scholarship and research—award-winning legal journalist Lee Strobel weighs the evidence to distinguish myth from truth about what happened in Bethlehem.

What can we know about the events of Christmas morning? And, most importantly, who was born that day? Some say the newborn baby would become a great moral leader. Others, a social critic. Still others view Jesus as a profound philosopher, a rabbi, a feminist, a prophet, and more. Many are convinced he was the divine Son of God. But who was he really—and how can we know for sure?

Evaluating and organizing the biblical, historical, and textual evidence, Strobel searches out the true identity of the child in the manger, analyzing:

-The latest, most up-to-date scholarship and research -The historical reliability of the accounts of Jesus’s birth -The evidence for the virgin birth -The array of Old Testament prophecies fulfilled by the birth of Jesus -The most common questions about the story of Christmas

Join Strobel as he invites us to push past the distractions of the holiday season and come into the presence of the baby who was born to change us and rewrite our eternal destination: the greatest gift of all.

On Dec. 6, Strobel posted, “Hobby Lobby stores nationwide are giving away FREE copies of my new book The Case for Christmas to customers as long as the half million copies last! On Saturday, Leslie and I visited their store in Paducah, KY and met wonderful people.”

Strobel shared that people have been taking photos and some have been sharing them online. One person wrote, “Wow this is really cool! Hobby Lobby is giving away a million free copies of Lee Strobel’s new book, ‘The Case for Christmas’!!” Another said, “I went to Hobby Lobby and look what they placed in my hand at checkout! How cool is that…sharing the gospel!”

Someone else shared, “If you go to Hobby Lobby and to check out at the register is this free book. But you have to ask because they busy and forget to offer it.” Another uploaded a video that showed copies of Strobel’s book on the shelf in the store with a sign reading: “Free Book!! Please Take One. Merry Christmas!”

First Baptist Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress recently announced that Hobby Lobby founder and CEO, David Green, would match a $7 million donation to help fund rebuilding the church’s historic chapel, which was destroyed in a fire in July 2024.

I’ve read Strobel’s “The Case for a Creator” which is a good survey and summary of the arguments for intelligent design.

A friend of mine is also personally acquainted with Strobel.

That’s great! I have a lot of respect for Strobel and his books. A lot of Hobby Lobby’s customers are already Christian, but hopefully this book will reach the unreached and bolster the faith of believers to help them explain Christ with a little more confidence.
