I love Archaeology, especially when it intersects with the Bible. Every once in a while, there is a find in Israel which validates a portion of Scripture. A coin with the name of a Biblical King, a little bell from the robe of a High Priest, or an unexpected cavity in the ground that leads to a tunnel can all testify that, even though some people don't believe the Spiritual implications of Scripture, it is a reliable source as to where to start digging. (For the Record, I believe in the Spiritual Part as well as the Archaeology part.)

One of the most obvious validations comes from Hezekiah's Water System and Wall, which are big tourist attractions in Jerusalem. The wall was uncovered in the City 45 feet down under many layers of destruction and rebuilding, and validates Today's verse. Even moreso is the Water Tunnel, which is open to visitors. We enter at one end and follow the narrow tunnel until it comes out at the Gihon Spring, just like the Bible says. Normally, I don't like narrow, confined spaces, but this was a "must see".

One of the most mysterious artifacts that intrigues Archaeologists is "The Ark of the Covenant" Here's something I wrote about that back in 2019:

In 1981, an old genre of movie(The Quest or Treasure Hunt) gave us a whole new Franchise that would spawn many imitators. It was, of course, "The Raiders of the Lost Ark".

In this exciting film, intrepid Archaeologist/Adventurer Indiana Jones competes with the Nazis to obtain the ancient, lost Ark of the Covenant, which, up to this time was really only familiar to students of the Old Testament. The Ark was, of course, the portable box that contained the Tablets of the Ten Commandments and was built to a pattern given to Moses by God during the Exodus. The Ark also preceded the Israelites into battle during the conquest of the Holy Land, and was believed to contain the Power of God. At the time we loved the movie, but thought the whole thing was somewhat preposterous. Although we thoroughly enjoyed watching the Nazis getting their faces melted off by the power within the Ark, we thought it to be nothing more than a ripping yarn.

Nearly 40 years later, however, the world is still talking about the Ark of the Covenant. Many expeditions to places all over the world follow leads to Scotland (Templars took it), Ethiopia (The Queen of Sheba's son by Solomon stole it!), Nova Scotia (Buried on Oak Island perhaps?), and, of course, Jerusalem. While we scoff at Nazis seeking such a relic, it has now been revealed that Hitler and Himmler were deep into the occult, and actually funded an archaeology team that traveled the world searching for artifacts that supposedly contained great power. The Spear of Longinus is another artifact that Hitler sought, along with, presumably, The Ark and the Holy Grail. It was believed that possession of these items give someone the invincible power to rule the world.

We see this exact attitude displayed in the time of Samuel. The Ark was holy and had power ONLY because God chose to manifest Himself THROUGH it. It was not a "battery" or "radioactive" or even, as the Philistines thought, a "god" in and of itself. Even the Israelites themselves, instead of turning to The One True God for their victory, chose instead to carry the Ark into Battle, as a talisman, which was JUST WRONG. It is what is now called "Magical Thinking". Another word for it is "Superstitious behavior". (Hey...it worked BEFORE!). It is bad enough that Israel was ascribing God's power to a THING, but their "religion" had become so corrupt and abusive that they were committing sacrilege and blasphemy and EXPECTING God to bless them because they were going through the motions.

They were LITERALLY "Putting God in a Box."

As I said before, faith doesn't require physical proof, but it's nice when it happens. Those who will not believe no matter what won't be convinced. Some people may be nudged towards saving faith by witnessing these "proofs". Those who already believe must resist the very human urge to gloat:

Engedi, the place of the Dead Sea Scrolls, had a water channel carved thru very hard rock. It is a very tight channel that you would have to wiggle thru. It is from a spring a short way from the old village above the seasonal waterfall.

There’s also a water tunnel at Tel Megiddo (Armageddon). I’ve been through that one too, but the one at Ein Geddi I didn’t get to see, as we arrived in Qumran too late in the day to explore. Next Trip!

I was at Engedi on a dig twice. We got to see some very interesting things as we explored around there. Getting water in such a dry place was quite a feat. The tunnel is above the dry 100ft waterfall, which you can see directly west of the cave where the scrolls were found.
