As Jonah ran From God he was headed towards fulfilling the Will of God and the Greatest Revival of All time!
As the Great Fish Spit out Jonah to the Ninevites it appeared as If Jonah had been Resurrected from The Grave!

Every year, on Herman Melville's Birthday, the Book "Moby Dick" is read aloud at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The various Chapters are assigned to various politicians and dignitaries, some of who do a nice job. Others, don't do as well, as it's not an easy book to read, especially out loud.

The Chapter that is an actual Sermon, based upon the Book of Jonah, is read across the street, at the Seaman's Bethel Chapel, which is a real church dating back to the era of the novel.

We tourists shuffled into the Chapel and were handed a piece of sheet music. I recognized the lyrics from the Novel. We squeezed into the cold wooden pews, nearly smothered in our January coats and scarves. The wheezy old organ played an intro, and then the whole church erupted into a mournful hymn. A costumed re-enactor mounted the pulpit and read the sermon from Moby Dick. It was a surreal experience! (Moby Dick Chapter 9)

"Father Mapple's" Sermon, based upon the book of Jonah, is tailor made for those who were about to embark on a perilous journey involving the Leviathan of the Seas, the Great Sperm Whale. The fictional preacher spoke primarily of Repentance, as he was speaking to rough men in a rough profession.

But there's so much more to Jonah than that.

Modern-day critics will say that the "Great Fish" that swallowed Jonah could not have been a whale, because the throat of a whale is too small to accept a human being. Also, a whale is not a fish...it's a mammal. The Bible actually says "fish" so I have no problem with that distinction.

Evidently, Jesus didn't have a problem with it either. In fact, He used the Story of Jonah to illustrate the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Himself, the Messiah. He called the scenario of Holy Week to the Three Days Jonah spent in the Whale (Fish), and then the Fish spewing Jonah out onto dry land. He speaks of Jonah as a a REAL Person who really went through this ordeal.

If Jesus believed the story, I do too.

Here's Gregoty Peck in the role of Father Mapple (1989). Gregory Peck played Captain Ahab in the 1956 Movie Version, so this was a nice thing for us fans to see. (One hopes that the actual sermon had an affect on the actors and crew!)

Amen, and Jesus also spent 3 days in hell, and took the keys of hell and death, making an open show to the heavenly powers who where powerless to oppose.
