These 3 Bible Stories Would Make Epic Bible Movies
Life Church ^ | Amanda Sims

Sometimes when I’m listening to the Bible (because hey, with the Bible app, you can do that), I come across a great story that makes me stop, close my eyes, and imagine the scene unfolding before me. It’s like a movie playing out in my mind with a stellar cast, a dramatic soundtrack, and cutting-edge special effects. Just for fun, I thought of three Bible stories that would be great movies.

I’m talking about cities being destroyed, women leading armies to victory, fields of zombies coming back to life. Ready to imagine the next blockbuster with me?

Joshua and Jericho. (Joshua 6:1-27) This is an epic but unusual battle story. I picture Joshua (Gerard Butler), the strong leader who follows God’s unexpected command, marching around the walled city with his army in silence…

Judge Deborah. (Judges 4:1-34) Deborah served as a judge in Israel, during a time when the people were generally not serving God, and were living in oppression from a Canaanite king and his military leader, Sisera. Deborah meted out judgments regarding disputes among the Israelites—until God called her to more…

The Valley of Bones. (Ezekiel 37:1-14) This feels a little like a reverse zombie movie, without the bitey, growly monsters. I imagine Ezekiel (Daniel Day-Lewis) as an old man, reflecting on the incredible things he’s seen in his life. His mind zeroes in on one horrifying, amazing scene. God once told him that despite Israel being practically a “dead” nation, with no land, king, or temple, He would restore its former blessings…

The story of Ehud and King Eglon. And we could cast JB Pritzker, Michael Moore, Reid Hoffman or Jerry Nadler as Eglon.

Daniel 5 would be a good one, with the climactic scene of the hand writing on the wall.

God ordered every single person in Jericho killed. Violates Geneva Conventions. We are too weak for such stories now.

Hollywood wouldn't make them. Full of Jews.

Then make one of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot wasn't a Jew.

Protestants miss out on the greatest of all bible stories, if the criterion is that it would make a great movie.

The Hammer of God: Under Emperor Cyrus of Persia, the New Jewish kingdom, though tributary, flourished. The Second Temple was built, and consecrated to God. But Cyrus was defeated by the Greeks, and when the Greek Empire was divided, Israel was given to the Seleucids, who distrusted Jewish semi-autonomy.

Onias defeats an attempt to tax the Jewish Temple. He is succeeded by his brother, Jason, who is in turn succeeded by Menelaus, who has him murdered to curry favor with the Seleucids.

Jason attempts to defeat the Seleucids, but the Seleucids attack on the Sabbath, when the Jews would not fight. The Jews are routed by Antiochus.

Antiochus enslaves the Jews, prohibits Jewish religious observance, and forces Jews to participate in the naked gymnasium, where adherence to Jewish law through circumcision could be revealed, and where rape was standard operating procedure. He prevented the Jews from making sacrifices to God. And he desecrated the Temple with the Great Abomination.

To prove that the Jews have renounced God, Antiochus requires them to eat pork. Seven brothers refuse, and they are tortured and put to death in front of their mother. They profess that they believe that evidenced by their righteousness, a just God would restore their lives to them when the Messiah comes.

Judas the Hammer rises up and defeats the Seleucids. They win, but are heartbroken that so many have fallen. Judas discovers that the fallen had kept on them trinkets and amulets indicating that they had trusted in other gods. He orders the treasures gained by conquering the Seleucids be gathered up, and as an atonement for those who died in the sin of idolatry, offers the treasure for the restoration of the Temple. Antiochus falls ill and reconciles with God, but dies in Persia unable to stop the war.

OK... I don’t have time to finish this post, but I think I’ve established the scope here pretty well.
