Revelation 8:8-11

8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

I have a couple of stories today, and, promise I will tie them together.

1. What Drove Van Gogh Crazy? As a very young teen (Junior High) I became obsessed with Vincent Van Gogh. I would go straight to the Van Gogh Collection in the Museum (after visiting the Mummies first) and gaze at the substantial number of paintings that the MFA had acquired over the years. Van Gogh's Paintings were in the Impressionist Galleries, but he was different. At the time, Van Gogh was still considered a little "odd" because he didn't fit into any category.

I read everything I could about Vincent. Author Irving Stone wrote an excellent novel about him called "Lust for Life", which probably wasn't intended for Seventh Grade Girls (especially with "Lust" in the title!) but I devoured it. It was after I asked Mom what "Absinthe" was. It seemed that Vincent was addicted to it, and it contributed to his bizarre behavior.

Mom replied that it was a very nasty liquor, that was illegal in America, and drove people crazy. I asked her what it was made from, and she said:

"WORMWOOD. " Oh...OK. I had no idea what "wormwood" was but it had to be bad. It made Vincent cut off his ear!

2. Chernoble: On April 26th, 1986, the Chernoble Nuclear Power Plant, in what was then the Soviet Union, had a meltdown. The resulting Radiation killed 28 People initially, and caused the evacuation of the entire town of Pripyat nearby. The area is still called an "Exclusion Zone", and although wildlife has returned, it is still considered "HOT". Various projects have been attempts to contain the radiation, which is still dangerous, concentrated into a huge blob of melted core called "The Elephant's Foot" under where the reactor used to be. All the water around the exclusion zone is considered contaminated.

3. SCUBA Diving in Bikini: A daredevil friend of mine was waxing poetic about his recent Diving Trip among Vintage WW2 Wrecks. Normally I would consider this a dream vacation, and in the South Pacific, one wouldn't even need a wet suit. A Bikini would do nicely for a little snorkeling. Then, as his narration continued, I realized that he wasn't talking about the bathing suit. He was talking about exploring the wrecks off BIKINI ISLAND. The wrecks weren't there because of WW2. They were there because they were the subjects of Nuclear Testing between 1946 and 1958. The original residents can't even go home to Bikini, because the water and plants are still contaminated. I love a good adventure, but I draw the line at exploring the wrecks at a Nuclear Test Site...with or without a Bikini.

5. Found in the Translation: Although I love the King James Version of the Bible, there are other good translations which I use from time to time. For the Series on Water, Rivers and Streams, I have chosen The New International Version (remembering always to include the appropriate Copyright Notices), because I think it's clear and understandable, especially the Narratives. What's wonderful about the NIV is that it has been translated into many languages worldwide. One of those languages is Ukrainian, and the word that is used for "Wormwood" is "чорнобиль". That's the name of a bitter herb called "Artimesia Vulgaris" which is the source of the Absinthe that drove Van Gogh crazy.

It's pronounced "Chernoble".

My prayer for Israel is that they are given wisdom, cunning, insight and the power of God to defeat their enemies - especially Hamas. That the hostages are rescued and that they and their families are comforted and strengthened to endure these horrible conditions until then. That the terrorists' schemes are thwarted and their leaders confounded in their plans and Israel is victorious in Gaza.

I also am compelled to even pray for the terrorists that their hearts are softened, they repent of their evil, are merciful and they come to believe in Jesus Christ and do what is right. I pray for the peace of Jerusalem and that the Jewish people recognize that Jesus is their promised Messiah and receive His gift of grace and they and their children can live in safety.

Finally, I pray that those who hate Israel and want to blame the Jewish people for all that is wrong in the world, will wake up and open their eyes to how they are being manipulated by the devil. That they would feel compassion, empathy and understanding towards the children of Israel and see them as allies in the battle against evil forces warring after the very souls of mankind.
