The death of John Huss, burned alive by the church: Ellen White describes the results.
The Great Controversy by Ellen White ^ | 1911 | Ellen White

Posted on 05/01/2025 11:36:36 AM PDT by vespa300

Even his enemies were struck with his heroic bearing. A zealous papist, describing the martyrdom of Huss, and of Jerome, who died soon after, said: “Both bore themselves with constant mind when their last hour approached. They prepared for the fire as if they were going to a marriage feast. They uttered no cry of pain. When the flames rose, they began to sing hymns; and scarce could the vehemency of the fire stop their singing.”—Ibid., b. 3, ch. 7.

When the body of Huss had been wholly consumed, his ashes, with the soil upon which they rested, were gathered up and cast into the Rhine, and thus borne onward to the ocean. His persecutors vainly imagined that they had rooted out the truths he preached. Little did they dream that the ashes that day borne away to the sea were to be as seed scattered in all the countries of the earth; that in lands yet unknown it would yield abundant fruit in witnesses for the truth. The voice which had spoken in the council hall of Constance had wakened echoes that would be heard through all coming ages. Huss was no more, but the truths for which he died could never perish. His example of faith and constancy would encourage multitudes to stand firm for the truth, in the face of torture and death. His execution had exhibited to the whole world the perfidious cruelty of Rome. The enemies of truth, though they knew it not, had been furthering the cause which they vainly sought to destroy.

She adds in this chapter about Huss and Jerome:

The death of Huss had not resulted as the papists had hoped. The violation of his safe-conduct had roused a storm of indignation, and as the safer course, the council determined, instead of burning Jerome, to force him, if possible, to retract. He was brought before the assembly, and offered the alternative to recant, or to die at the stake. Death at the beginning of his imprisonment would have been a mercy in comparison with the terrible sufferings which he had undergone; but now, weakened by illness, by the rigors of his prison house, and the torture of anxiety and suspense, separated from his friends, and disheartened by the death of Huss, Jerome's fortitude gave way, and he consented to submit to the council. He pledged himself to adhere to the Catholic faith, and accepted the action of the council in condemning the doctrines of Wycliffe and Huss, excepting, however, the “holy truths” which they had taught.—Ibid, vol. 2, p. 141.

The papal leaders, despairing of conquering by force, at last resorted to diplomacy. A compromise was entered into, that while professing to grant to the Bohemians freedom of conscience, really betrayed them into the power of Rome. The Bohemians had specified four points as the condition of peace with Rome: the free preaching of the Bible; the right of the whole church to both the bread and the wine in the communion, and the use of the mother tongue in divine worship; the exclusion of the clergy from all secular offices and authority; and, in cases of crime, the jurisdiction of the civil courts over clergy and laity alike. The papal authorities at last “agreed that the four articles of the Hussites should be accepted, but that the right of explaining them, that is, of determining their precise import, should belong to the council—in other words, to the pope and the emperor.”—Wylie, b. 3, ch. 18. On this basis a treaty was entered into, and Rome gained by dissimulation and fraud what she had failed to gain by conflict; for, placing her own interpretation upon the Hussite articles, as upon the Bible, she could pervert their meaning to suit her own purposes.

After Jerome himself had retracted and was consigned to the flames, regretting his earlier decision to submit....Ellen White writes the following:

So perished God’s faithful light bearers. But the light of the truths which they proclaimed—the light of their heroic example—could not be extinguished. As well might men attempt to turn back the sun in its course as to prevent the dawning of that day which was even then breaking upon the world.

Her last sentence is talking about the dawn of light God would bring to a very dark world....with the PROTESTANT REFORMATION!

Seventh day Adventists LOVE the Protestant Reformation.

What a line she writes about the papal burning alive of God’s true witnesses......the seed it planted....

Quote:

“The enemies of truth, though they knew it not, had been furthering the cause which they vainly sought to destroy.”

Ellen White begins the chapter on Huss and Jerome with the following:

The gospel had been planted in Bohemia as early as the ninth century. The Bible was translated, and public worship was conducted, in the language of the people. But as the power of the pope increased, so the word of God was obscured. Gregory VII, who had taken it upon himself to humble the pride of kings, was no less intent upon enslaving the people, and accordingly a bull was issued forbidding public worship to be conducted in the Bohemian tongue. The pope declared that “it was pleasing to the Omnipotent that His worship should be celebrated in an unknown language, and that many evils and heresies had arisen from not observing this rule.”—Wylie, b. 3, ch. 1. Thus Rome decreed that the light of God’s word should be extinguished and the people should be shut up in darkness. But Heaven had provided other agencies for the preservation of the church. Many of the Waldenses and Albigenses, driven by persecution from their homes in France and Italy, came to Bohemia. Though they dared not teach openly, they labored zealously in secret. Thus the true faith was preserved from century to century.

Jan Huss dared to translate the Bible into Czech.

Just like John Wycliffe before him dared to translate the Bible into English.

What would they think about people today not reading the Bible?

I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

1 Corinthians 1:10

The title is inaccurate. It should read, "The Catholic Church." There is One Church (Eph. 1:22,23; 4:4) and they are the One Church Of The Saved (Eph. 5:23). The Catholic "church" is not it.

To the contrary, the Jezebel of Rev. 2 is considered by the best scholars to be the Catholics.

___What would they think about people today not reading the Bible?___

We live in an age of Bible ignorance and historical ignorance as it relates to the Protestant Reformation and how God worked in a mighty way to restore gospel truths.

The “church” had buried the truth so deep, God had to work to gradually bring back gospel, salvation, and end time truths. We believe in present truth, that it is continually unfolding as it relates to prophecy.

Your statement above is right on. The reformers, who with their blood, purchased the freedom and liberty for us to read and study scripture for ourselves. She had reserved this right to herself and she was defeated in God’s providence. And she never changes.....at least very rarely does she change. And her wound has healed. That is the ominious thing to watch in the world today.

She is growing and has momentum.

Jan Huss dared to translate the Bible into Czech. Just like John Wycliffe before him dared to translate the Bible into English.

There were vernacular Bible translations in these (and other languages) before Huss and Wycliffe. The problem was not that they made translations, but they were bad translations (which you would be embarrassed to use today) with heretical footnotes and commentary. Heresy was, at the time in most of Europe, a state crime as much as it was religious.

Yes, absolutely. She fits all the characteristics. From her claims to the precise time periods.

My prayer is that people seeking truth will read more and more of the Protestant Reformation writers, what they wrote, what they believed. By beholding who this whore of babylon is....the mammoth system of deception, lies, and persecution..then and only then can they find safety from deception.

In Revelation the name of the game is deception and the issue is worship.

No other spiritual power has the innate marks to deceive as she can. Nobody will be fooled by a Damian with 666 on his neck, or Islam, or Buddah, or new age, in fact, all them will eventually come under her banner in the great time of trouble......all of them.

She .......she is the one that will deceive the entire world and how marvelous she will appear. To be able to stand against her in that day......will take more faith and courage than to stand up alone to Hitler in Germany in the 30s.

Jesus said....so so deceiving...as to fool even the elect. Now that is a church that walks, talks and acts like the real thing. And people don’t read or study the Bible.....God sends them this delusion.

I'm familiar with what's know as the Wessex Gospels, translations into Old English. I believe the problem is that by Wycliffe's day, nobody could read that style of English. Were there more contemporary English translations (Middle English) available before Wycliffe?

Seventh day Adventist Bible Scholar, Dr. Conrad Vine has preached a sermon.....”The Catholic States of America”....

It is simply mind boggling to listen to as he lists the characteristics, the history, the dogma, of this massive religious counterfeit.

He makes an intereting point how Catholic writers rarely quote from scripture. To them is Augustine and Aquinas that they hold up more than all others.

And he talks about their claims of infallibility, the 1260 year prophetic period.....etc. etc. etc.

This is a Bible Protestant Scholar.....and in the Seventh day Adventist church......he is very courageous to be saying these things now......in public:

BY JOHN MILTON

On the Late Massacre in Piedmont
Avenge, O Lord, thy slaughter'd saints, whose bones
Lie scatter'd on the Alpine mountains cold,
Ev'n them who kept thy truth so pure of old,
When all our fathers worshipp'd stocks and stones;
Forget not: in thy book record their groans
Who were thy sheep and in their ancient fold
Slain by the bloody Piemontese that roll'd
Mother with infant down the rocks. Their moans
The vales redoubl'd to the hills, and they
To Heav'n. Their martyr'd blood and ashes sow
O'er all th' Italian fields where still doth sway
The triple tyrant; that from these may grow
A hundred-fold, who having learnt thy way
Early may fly the Babylonian woe.

Chilling. From THE greatest.

John Milton denouncing the pope as THE triple tyrant
who blasphemously claims authority over
1. Heaven
2. Earth, and
3. Hell

well, that's something.

And of course this is what the church thought of Wycliff:

The Council of Constance declared Wycliffe a heretic on 4 May 1415, and banned his writings. The Council decreed that Wycliffe’s works should be burned and his bodily remains removed from consecrated church ground, following the customary logic that heretics had put themselves outside the church. This order, confirmed by Pope Martin V, was eventually carried out in 1428.[12] Wycliffe’s corpse, or a neighbour’s,[48]: page 121, middle of column was exhumed; unusually, on the orders of the bishop the remains were burned and the ashes drowned in the River Swift, which flows through Lutterworth.[49]

Justice is coming. In Revelation, we read the souls under the altar cry out for justice.

That church during her reign of terror tortured, burned, killed by some estimates over 50 million. Her 1260 year rule , where she sat on kings and heads of state, prided herself on her control and reign over the nations.

Woman is a church in prophecy, beast is a nation. She is actually both. A soverign spiritual “nation” in Rome unlike any other. And the woman sits on the beast......the church will in the end......control the world and the state will give her her power to cause the world to marvel after her.

It’s coming......And she is very intolerant. Look at how some of her radical supporters here behave. They have less tolerance than ISIS. Its a very ominious sign but prophetic. Imagine them in a great time of trouble when they have to cast blame on those who are not going along with their church.....yeah...we’re done.
