When a crime is committed, it has to have a punishment; it has to be made right, but when someone's life is taken, how can justice restore what's been lost? Christians have long debated the issue of capital punishment, holding a wide range of views. Pastor Jack offers his perspective on what the Bible has to say about the death penalty, particularly in cases of murder.

A very interesting look at the death penalty from a Scriptural perspective.
I’ve heard similar discussions in the past.
Interestingly, all the comments following the podcast were positive. I didn’t see any taking him to task for his presentation.
God is the final judge. We should facilitate transportation.
And that’s GOD’S plan for how it’s supposed to be.
I agree with the idea though, of presenting them the gospel every day and giving them a chance to repent.
The other thing is, with cameras everywhere and everyone having cell phones, there’s far less reasonable doubt about who did it and what they did. DNA analysis also goes a long way to establishing guilt.
And self-defense or protecting another person is NOT murder. Accidents as well, although, IMO, negligence is a more foggy area.
Capital punishment restores nothing. Neither does incarceration whether the crime was murder or something less. I'm not saying I'm opposed to capital punishment or incarceration, I'm just pointing out that nothing gets restored.
NO. That’s true.
the OT way of dealing with theft, however does, and that is that the their restore 4 times what they stole.
Even though it can never change the effect done to the injured party.
“Christians have long debated the issue of capital punishment”
If there never was capital punishment, there would be no Christianity.
In retrospect, I begin to see why God takes sin so seriously.
Everything we do or say affects someone, somehow, for good or bad. And it is not within our power to every completely atone for the bad inflicted on the injured party.
That thought is worthy of spending more time ruminating over. Hmmmm.....
VERY TRUE!!!!!
Excellent point.
nothing is supposed to get restored really- it’s just meant to be a form of justice. eye for eye- and to dissuade others from trying the same -
The most loving thing you can do for a murderer, is put them on the clock to execution. Nothing makes you think seriously about where you spend eternity, than knowing it is coming soon and has a date.
It is Justice, YHVH demands it. Read the Torah.

[[begin to see why God takes sin so seriously.]]
Sin isn’t just the act itself, it is the after effects that reach into generations that makes it so evil and worthy of eternal punishment should the person not become saved-
A Christian think tank discussed this and basically, in a nutshell- say someone kills a father- the effects don’t end at the death of the father many times- many times the wife can’t cope- becomes addict of some kind, the children grow up without both parents because mom is missing emotionally for them, the kids act out, get into trouble- have kids out of wedlock, get imprisoned themselves, their kids grow up without their mom or father- and on and on it goes- all because the father was killed to begin with this ripples down through generations- and really changes the course of life for that family, and even relatives who are affected as well-
This is why God takes sin so seriously- We often think that our sins are personal to us only- but not so- it changes us and causes lost blessings all around because we don’t walk the path we should- and all of our relationships get affected too because to it-
If anyone is interested- here is the link to the think tank- some really good articles- kinda tough reads- in-depth- but worth it- He tackles the really tough questions that undeliverables ask or accuse God and Christians of- The second links talk about hell and it’s fairness or not- there is another article- that delves into it more- can’t find it right now htough

“I’m just pointing out that nothing gets restored.”
What makes you think that capital punishment is designed to restore anything? It is punishment for the murderer and a witness for people to dissuade them from committing murder.
The first command God gave Noah after the flood was the institution of capital punishment. Never could see what the controversy is about.
The Biblical patriarchs dished it out fairly liberally.
Thanks for the links.
Definitely worth giving it a read.
And yes, even a missing father even if the kids don’t get messed up as we see today, still produces scars and affects families for generations in how they relate to each others and other people.
We’re rather short sighted in that our culture does not lend itself to thinking through the long term consequences of our behavior.
die the way the victim died.
I have had the thought that maybe part of hell is the perp experiencing what he put the victim through.
For eternity.
No Scripture to back that up, of course, but it seemed like it wouldn’t be a bad idea.
There is precedent for that in Scripture.
