The word, "Cardinal" doesn't go before the first name, it goes before the last name.
See, when you call Donald Trump, "President Donald Trump," you're still calling him by his name. You're just adding a title to say what's significant about him. ("Yes, THAT Donald Trump!") You're simply substituting the word, "Mr." It's really grammatically no different than Sheriff John Smith or Coach Harry Brown or Pvt. David Jones. And some day, we'll talk about former president Donald Trump or Sgt. David Jones or retired Gen. Pete Williams.
A Cardinal or a Lord will always be a Cardinal or a Lord. It's now permanently his name... unless he becomes Pope, in which he assumes an entirely new name. So instead of being Carol Wojtyla who just happens to be a Cardinal, so you can call him Cardinal Carol Wojtyla, he's now Carol Cardinal Wojtyla... until he's Pope John Paul II, anyway. So these Vatican-based journalists seem shockingly ignorant as they discuss Cardinal Peter Erdo. He's not a Cardinal named Peter Erdo. His name is Peter Cardinal Erdo!
Hence, while you still see Pres. Trump correctly referred to as Mr. Trump, you'll never see Cardinal Erdo referred to as Mr. Erdo.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
“Carol Cardinal Wojtyla”
Karol Cardinal Wojtyla
In other news, a collection of mothers in law are under indictment by their respective attornies general for not showing sufficient respect to their grammars.
Well, if you want to get picky, it’s not Cardinal Erdo.
It’s Cardinal Erdő.
I personally don’t think it’s a big deal. But my older Hungarian relatives would.
🙂
“A Cardinal or a Lord will always be a Cardinal or a Lord.”
I say no. They could do some thing to get themself demoted or excommunicated or whatever the proper word is for the person and situation.
It’s just a title like anything else, because all people are human and could do serious wrong or find themself out of the “club” they once were in.
This sounds like one of those “inside baseball” subjects, figuratively speaking, which the general public doesn’t know about.
I’ve only ever heard Cardinals referred to as “Cardinal (last name)”, so didn’t know there was a certain way to give his name if also using his first name.
Thanks for the explanation. I have always wondered about this. Is there a reference you can point to that supports your explanation?
What if they are defrocked? They will always be a priest, deacon or bishop I understand because it is an indelible mark on their soul but that isn’t the case with the office of Cardinal?
Vatican is contemptible..
Disgusting as can be.
Scum of the earth.
LORD????? LORD???? I have been a Catholic for 77 years and have NEVER heard of a Cardinal called LORD!!!!!
Aren’t you proud to be a Catholic Hater??? I kNOW you are!!
Sorry, this is as of today.
I’ve never been a Catholic hater.
I’m talking about the Vatican.
It’s at the point where the question is how can you or any Christian have allegiance to the evil communist organization.
You can spit on Cardinal Zen along with the rotting in Hell late Pope and all the scum in the Vatican.
I’m more pro-Catholic than you.
Long live Cardinal Zen.
Vatican deep state needs to repent.
I long for the days when, in order to reach print, a story had to answer who, what, when, where and why in the first line.
Thanks for clearing that up and I’m being sincere. The press, on the other hand, should know better.

Then why even mention it?
You nitpick/make a silly issue of over “ő”, which most Americans do not even have on their keyboards.
Please note that I added a 🙂 at the end of my post.
It means that I was just funnin’ around. Not every post here has to be deadly serious. We also see something like that when a poster adds /s at the end of the post.
Without the 🙂 or a /s, yeah… the intent would be different.
Then I agree: If you were funnin’ around, you should have put the /s at the end.
You misread what I wrote. I said a Cardinal or a Lord will always be a Cardinal or a Lord. Nothing in that suggests that you should call a Cardinal, “Lord.”
But actually, in Britain, Anglican Bishops are called Lord Bishop, or just “Lord,” even if they are not in the House of Lords.
Or Lord Mayor, in every hamlet in UK and Ireland...
My whole life, Cardinals were addressed like that. Journos are supposed to know these things. College and curiosity aren’t what they used to be.
They use that title in Britain. I always found it jarring when reading about the Church in England.
