American culture these days is awash with stories of succession (the Murdoch empire), family drama (the Kennedys) and power (President Donald Trump on social media donning a kingly crown). Now comes a biblical tale to rival today’s news cycle — the coming-of-age story of King David — an “underdog” who comes to rule over the “House of David.”
The show’s creators, Christian filmmakers Jon Gunn and Jon Erwin, attribute the success of the series — which has become the No. 2 most-watched on Prime Video since the eight-episode season premiered on Feb. 27 — to the lessons King David’s story imparts to audiences about dealing with political rivalries and international conflicts.
“Story is everything. ‘House of David’ brings to life one of the most compelling, dramatic and human stories in all of history — the rise of an underdog. I think audiences connect with that,” Gunn, the show’s executive producer, co-director and co-writer, told Jewish Insider.
“David’s story is timeless. He was a warrior, a poet, a flawed leader, a man after God’s own heart — yet deeply human. His rise, his failures and his redemption all speak to the weight of power,” said Gunn...

I find it difficult to reconcile “a man after God’s own heart” with being an underdog.
What do you mean by underdog?
I just can’t get into these made for tv Christian shows, like the Chosen. If you use the Bible, that’s fine, but with Hollywood you have to have Scripps, and you have to have show after show after show and so they start just throwing in things that aren’t biblically accurate. Characters say things that are just made up and they do things that are just made up and so it’s just a complete waste of time. If you just wanna watch a show that’s based on something that’s fine like Superman or Batman, but realize it has mostly nothing to do with the Bible
I am with ya there. The first problem is the casting….horrible . Then, throw in the phony accents ands its unwatchable.
"Eyaah, eyaah, where's your Messiah NOW??"
A lot of my friends watch the Chosen, and so I tuned in for about 30 seconds one time and basically they were in a room and someone was talking to Mary and she was sharing stories about Jesus and it was just made up nonsense and I thought wow what a stinker. She was basically saying”- I had to change God’s diapers. “ What a load.
Billy Crystal did a bit on this 40 years ago. Hilarious!
I’ve started it 3 times and can’t last thru the 2nd episode even reading a book to get past the slow parts....that is, the made up parts.
It sucks.
Yep. My problem is Hollywood’s penchant for drifting so far away from the source material and the actual story. The constant need to insert new sub-plots, new characters, or just completely make stuff up “because”. We hold the Bible as “true”, it’s not like just riffing on some Marvel comic.
This is the quintessential story of the underdog winning against all odds...
I know what you mean. I think the term is, ‘Historical Dramas’. While the stories are wonderful, they are not fleshed out enough for a tv show or a movie, so they have to be padded with drama or filler to fit into the modern concept of what is expected of a story.
That is where the trouble starts. Adding to, or taking away from, an already perfect story to meet some editor’s version of what is needed to pass muster with today’s fickle audience.
That is how the movie Noah got the lovely Rock People! House of David falls for some of this with its lame dialog, but it is still somewhat enjoyable to watch. Better than Reacher.
It was on his "Mahvelous" album which is hilarious (especially the part about him being an adolescent boy, and how his crotch ruled everything he did or thought!)
The girl's father (who was on the police force IIRC) on her first date with him at 12 when he picked her up after his crotch told him how to get to her house: "Hello, Billy. Come on in. Ever see a .38 Special before?"
Indeed
For instance (made up part)?
I have only seen one episode, the latest one, with my daughter. Seeing the article I thought I was going to be going against the crowd. I did not like at all. Most of it was not in the Bible and much of it was contrary to the Bible. And the worst part, I think, is that the people watching it think they are learning the Bible. My Daughter could not tell where the errors were!
Trivia, what was David’s hair color? hint, not black. I know trivia.
But my point is not trivia.
So are you saying baby Jesus didn’t soil his diapers?
Ever heard of “David vs Goliath?”
The opening of each episode states clearly that some of the material is not Biblical. The story is based broadly on the book of Samuel. It is not Bible study, it is dramatization. But take it for what it is, pro-faith entertainment with a non-woke outlook.
A completely different animal. I love EGR.
