One of the most difficult songs to play on guitar (at least if he does it RIGHT), is "Hotel California" by the Eagles. There are at least ten chords in the song, and it goes up and down the neck. The words are pretty weird, and everybody has their own idea what they mean. Some say they are about Addiction, others say the words are about Lust or Sorcery. All the interpretations point to Sin, so we can just agree that that's the central point of the song. It is not a song that should be attempted alone because there are two guitar parts, with a long, difficult, iconic guitar solo at the end. If you get that part wrong, you have botched the song.

Just as I was about to go up and play, in walks my FAVORITE Lead Guitarist "Flamenco Tom". He didn't have his guitar with him, and had just dropped in for a bite to eat.

"Tom, grab Scottie's Guitar and play "Hotel California with me!" I said, just as the waitress was putting his plate of Buffalo Wings on the table.

So, as the Chicken Wings cooled off, Tom picked up Scottie's guitar and, with my little Sister on Cajon (Box Drum), played a perfect version of "Hotel California" with me.

Just as I sang the line:

"We are all just prisoners here, of our own DEVICE",

I held up my strumming hand in front of my face in an imitation of somebody engrossed on their Smart Phone. A couple of people gave me a knowing look and held up their "device" in recognition of my interpretation of that line. In today's world there are a LOT of people who are "Prisoners of their own DEVICE". Since the song was written back in the 1970's, I doubt if the Eagles had any idea what they were predicting with that line.

In its original context, the line probably meant that we humans make our own "hell" all by ourselves. We can't just say "The Devil made me do it". Adam and Eve already tried that excuse, and it didn't work.

Not much has changed in Thousands of years. People who walk in darkness feel trapped. They believe that, although they can check out anytime they want, they can never leave. They are prisoners of their own device.

Real Life has a lot more than "Ten Chords". It sometimes has complicated, incomprehensible lyrics. We feel that we are on a "Dark, Desert Highway, and our heads grow heavy, and our sight grows dim". And then...there's that long, difficult SOLO, and you think you are going to have to play it all by yourself.

The tragedy of "Hotel California" is that it doesn't have an Exit Plan. There is not one glimmer of Hope in the song

With The Holy Spirit walking alongside (That's what "Paraclete" means,) we do not have to walk in the flesh, be imprisoned by our own devices, or be crushed by the loss of hope. If we Walk in the Spirit, we don't have to play that long solo alone.
