[Catholic Caucus] Ex-Synod Has Become an Image of a Dying Church

Francis' ex-synod continues "in the midst of general indifference", writes Specola (InfoVaticana.com, 6 October).

At a recent press conference of the ex-synod, there were more speakers than journalists, so to speak.

The ex-synod is turning out to be "a series of monologues that are not even interesting as jocular entertainment".

"The sight of a few hundred brainy Synod mothers and fathers at a kind of sterile wedding banquet is sad and is the living image of a Church that is dying out".

The obsessively repeated term "synodality" has become like those political slogans such as "innovation" or "resilience" which only serve to show that one is on the side of the regime in order to get out of trouble.

Then there is 'obsessive control from above'. There are no reports of the interventions. They do not say who spoke and what they proposed or criticised. This is a break with the method of transparency that characterised the real synods of Francis' predecessors.

The debate of the assembly is very limited. The work is carried out around 36 tables, each with about ten members of the Synod.

The participants take turns to speak. There is a first round of three minutes to say what they think, then another three minutes to express criticism.

A second round of three minutes each to identify the crux of the debate and another three minutes for in-depth analysis.

Then everything is delegated to five language tables. Meanwhile, a supergroup analyses the main issues raised.

The bishops and lay members of the ex-synod were graded as if they were students in a seminary.

At Thursday's meeting, the first indications of the work of the ten study commissions were presented. But there will be no debate or vote on these drafts.

The results of the work will be presented to Francis on 15 June 2025, when the lights of the Synod will have long since gone out.

Francis has set up groups to make an "in-depth analysis" of "issues of great importance". One of them, particularly dangerous, is destined to undermine sexual morality and life issues.

The Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, Cardinal Mario Grech, is responsible for ensuring that the study groups follow the 'synodal method'.

The very concept of synodality "is not theologically clarified". Theology is replaced by meaningless slogans such as 'relational conversion' and 'conversation of the Spirit'.

It’s synodality that’s dying, not the Church.
