Progressive “Christianity,” if you want to call it that, is nothing but a fraud—a shameless charade where self-appointed “pastors” like this Emily Bowen-Marler strut about in clerical garb, pretending to speak for a God they openly despise.
In this sermon, she says that the Kingdom of God is like a pride fest, like a drag queen reading stories to children. Interestingly enough, that’s exactly how I picture Hell.
And how could these parables teach them that maybe they don’t have to be so afraid? The kingdom of God is like pride fest filled with people singing and dancing and explosion of color and laughter and love, acceptance and affirmation, joy and celebration that painted the heart of Springfield in a spectrum of color, reminding us of God’s care for humanity and God’s promise to not destroy the beautiful people God created.
The empire of God is like the queer youth who challenged the confines of binary thinking and tore down the rigid parameters of masculine and feminine, diffusing the toxicity that had plagued communities of faith for generations until the spectrum of gender diversity was lived into and celebrated as far as the eye could see.
The realm of God is the bisexual woman who fell in love with the person, not because they were a man or a woman, but instead seeing their heart and their mind and their beauty that transcended gender, teaching others to love more deeply.
The kingdom of God is like the drag queen who read delight filled stories to children, filling the children’s minds with wonder and creativity, creating a safe place for them to explore what it means to be human and alive until all children grew up knowing they too could be loved and accepted in this world.
The empire of God is like the trans woman athlete whose presence on the women’s team helped strengthen the bonds of trust and compassion which buoyed all of their confidence as a team, with all players feeling empowered to be their best and made them an unstoppable force in their sport.

Obviously, Bowen-Marler isn’t a minister of the gospel, she’s a charlatan, a peddler of saccharine affirmations disguised as “love,” spewing hollow platitudes to justify every sin under the sun. In her hands, the parables of Jesus are weapons, twisted in an attempt to suffocate God in the filthy rags of her own lusts and delusions. Progressivism doesn’t care about the truth, it tramples on it, crushes it underfoot, and replaces it with its self-indulgent fantasies.
This is not even an attempt to reshape Christianity. It’s a full-scale rebellion—a counterfeit gospel that claims tolerance but practices deceit, preaching love while denying the very nature of the One who is love. It mocks holiness, sneers at repentance, and clings to the myth that God will bend to human whims.
And no matter how hard they try to drown out His voice with their sweet-sounding delusions, they can’t escape the inevitable reckoning that God will not be mocked by their rebellion.
So do I. Emily Bowen-Marler is a heretic.

More specifically, the official religion of the ruling class.

One man's Hell is another woman's heaven...

The Rev. Emily Bowen-Marler (she/her) has served at Brentwood since October of 2001, and became the associate minister in 2004. After growing up in southern California, she moved to Indianapolis to attend grad school, then moved to Springfield to work for Brentwood. Her primary responsibilities include the cultivation of vibrant, rich expressions of worship, music, and the arts, as well as offering oversight to outreach and justice initiatives, along with support to congregational care, children’s ministries and church administration.
While she is an accomplished singer and musician (she has led worship at the Disciples of Christ General Assembly and previously served as the music director for the Disciple Women’s Ministries event Quadrennial), she is just as well-known for using her voice to advocate for local causes related to justice and equality. A frequent speaker at community events, she also helps organize local advocacy initiatives related to LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion. She’s served on the board for Aids Project of the Ozarks and is a member of the Musgrave Foundation Grantmaking Advisory Committee. She holds degrees from Phillips Theological Seminary (MDiv), Christian Theological Seminary (MA), and Chapman University (BM). She is the co-author with Phil Snider of Toward a Hopeful Future, winner of the Mayflower Award for Best Book in Church & Society.
