Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy and Wonderful Name!
How Awesome You Are,
and How Glorious!
You Alone Are Worthy to Be Praised,
For You Alone Are My Strength And My Song,
My Rock and My Redeemer!
You Are The One True God Of Abraham,
And Know The End From The Beginning
and the Beginning From The End,
Because You ARE The Aleph~Tav,
The Alpha and the Omega,
The Beginning and The End of All Things.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Many people on this Daily Thread have expressed a love for the 1956 movie The Ten Commandments. Some of us even have "Charlton Heston Stories" to share. Others have shared their first experience with the movie, either in a movie theater, a Drive-In, or even as a heavily-edited TV Special, constantly interrupted by ads. For me, it addressed and answered a mystery of my childhood, explaining why my Jewish friends celebrated Passover around the same time as my family celebrated Easter.

We used to bring our lunch to school, open our lunch box at our desks, and eat our Wonder Bread sandwiches, as the teacher would pass out half-pints of milk to every student. The now "politically Incorrect" Peanut Butter and Jelly was a favorite because there was no refrigeration available. It was assumed that Baloney was so full of preservatives that it wouldn't go bad, but PBJ was safer. Mattapan had a large Jewish population, and so most of my classmates celebrated Passover instead of Easter, and for a whole week, my Jewish friends brought in the weirdest looking sandwiches that often resembled a pile of sticky crumbs. The bread was so thin and fragile, that it crumbled faster than even a Saltine. This "Matzoh" as it was called, was the bane of these children's existence for a whole week, and crumbled so much that the teacher had to sweep the floor after lunch.

When I asked my friend why she was eating these weird crackers, she replied "Because it's Passover."

Oh. So that explains it.

It took a Hollywood Movie to explain to me what Passover was, and the reason for the crumbly sandwiches.

Making bread is a big long process. As yeast is a living organism, conditions have to be exactly right for the bread to rise, and be light and fluffy. (Wonder Bread boasted that it had "no holes", but holes in bread are an indication of the yeast rising and making the bread light and delicious.) First, the yeast has to be dissolved in warm water and a bit of flour added for it to "feed" on. Then this mixture is kneaded with more and more flour until it reaches a certain texture. Then, it has to be left in a warm place to rise (the yeast is working its way through the dough and growing). Then, after several hours, you have to "punch the dough down" and knead it some more. Only after all that can you actually form the loaves and bake the bread.

The standard explanation for Matzoh is that it is called "The Bread of Haste". After the Last and Deadly Plague, when the Firstborn of Egypt was slain by The Angel of Death, the Hebrew Slaves had to get out of town FAST. There was no time to knead dough, punch it down, let it rise, or any of that other Cooking Channel stuff. They had to just slap the flour and water onto a griddle, pack it up, and LEAVE.

A quick look at any Kosher-For-Passover Matzoh Product leaves and interesting impression. A typical Matzoh is very flat, has stripes on it from the griddle, and is pierced at regular intervals, presumably from the baking process. To ensure that there is absolutely NO leavening in the bread, even the flour is different, because even the natural flour has some leavening in it just by its nature.

If "leavening" is symbolic of sin, as it sometimes is in Scripture, we can draw quite a few parallels:

1. Jesus was Sinless: The Only One Who can make atonement for somebody else would be somebody who didn't need to atone for his OWN sin first. Jesus, like the Innocent Lamb that was slaughtered at Passover to shield the Children of Israel from the Angel of Death. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.(Hebrews 4:15)

2. Matzoh has Stripes on it for some reason: "Stripes" are an old-fashioned word for the awful wounds caused by flogging or whipping: But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

3. Matzoh is pierced with little holes. And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. (Zechariah 12:10 KJV)

4. Jesus actually called Himself "The Bread of Life: And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.(John 6:35 KJV)

So, Jesus is not only the Passover LAMB, He is also the Passover BREAD.

Today's Scripture admonishes us to be aware that "a little leaven spreads through the whole lump". None of us are without sin, but we don't have to nurture it, feed it, knead it, warm it, or let it grow. We can look to Jesus, Our Great High Priest, who was tempted in all ways just like us, but never "gave in".

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. (Mark 4:22)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 64

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

1 Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
preserve my life from the dread enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
from the scheming of evildoers,
3 who whet their tongues like swords,
who aim bitter words like arrows,
4 shooting from ambush at the blameless;
they shoot suddenly and without fear.
5 They hold fast to their evil purpose;
they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, ‘Who can see us?*
6 Who can search out our crimes?*
We have thought out a cunningly conceived plot.’
For the human heart and mind are deep.

7 But God will shoot his arrow at them;
they will be wounded suddenly.
8 Because of their tongue he will bring them to ruin;*
all who see them will shake with horror.
9 Then everyone will fear;
they will tell what God has brought about,
and ponder what he has done.

10 Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord
and take refuge in him.
Let all the upright in heart glory.
