Question - why is that needed, or appropriate?
I think it’s appropriate for the same reason that Ezra and other elders got up on a scaffold and read the scriptures, “and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading”. It’s why commentaries are written and read; it’s why sermons are constructed and preached.
There are passages of scripture which are subtle, vague and oblique. A person who knows how to ask about them, by reason of use, can obtain greater depth of insight about such passages by learning to listen to, and rely on, the Holy Spirit. It’s also possible to garner more meaning by hearing from a Spurgeon or a Vernon McGee, who were masterful in the art of making the complexities of scripture more plain, even more dramatic.
I think the “Chosen” series is such a tool. I’ve seen all episodes to date, and have found no fault in them; meanwhile I have been brought to tears often when I’ve seen those characters, and those events surrounding my Lord, dramatized.
