Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent Is Your Name Over All The Earth!
How Mighty,
How Majestic,
and How Wonderful!
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise and Worship,

The Names and Titles of God (The Glory of the LORD) Isaiah 40:5

Isaiah 40 has so much in it that it dominates the first segment of Handel's Messiah. From the Tenor's plaintive "Comfort Ye My People", through "Every Valley", we come to the first song that takes up the whole Choir."And The Glory of the Lord".

As I said, way back when we were looking at the Scriptures in Handel's Messiah, I mentioned that a lot of Handel's Music was based upon dancing. To most of us, raised in the Western Tradition, the idea of dancing to Scripture or as a form of worship seems pretty weird. And yet, here is this Chorus from Handel's Messiah, sung to a lively 3/4 Time, just perfect for a walze or even a tarantella, depending on how fast one plays it. To the audience hearing it for the first time, it didn't seem weird at all, as they attended the performance for entertainment, rather than worship. The Baroque period was full of Dance Music, and This particular Chorus makes me feel like dancing.

Of course, not all of Handel's Messiah is set to dance rhythms. "He Was Despised" is set in such a way that it can drag down the entire piece. It walks a very delicate line and needs expert singing and interpretation so that it advances the story rather than bringing it to a full halt.

Before I go too deep into Handel's Messiah and get lost, I want to get back to Today's Scripture, the one that Handel danced to.

The Hebrew Word for "Glory" wasn't the one I expected. The word used here for "Glory" is כָּבוֹד kabowd {kaw-bode'}

The definition provided by the link is awesome:

1) glory, honour, glorious, abundance
1a) abundance, riches
1b) honour, splendour, glory
1c) honour, dignity
1d) honour, reputation
1e) honour, reverence, glory
1f) glory

All of that, just in One Name.

It's enough to make you wanna DANCE!
