Suffering does nothing to purify from sin.
The only thing that cleanses sin is he shedding of blood.
Hebrews 9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Once cleansing is done by the blood, there is no further need for purification or cleansing.

Hebrews 23 It is necessary therefore that the patterns of heavenly things should be cleansed with these: but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24 For Jesus is not entered into the holies made with hands, the patterns of the true: but into heaven itself, that he may appear now in the presence of God for us. Christ freed us from the need for blood sacrifice.
How can we perform a blood sacrifice after we are dead?
Christ is the last blood sacrifice that man needs.
But the sins against man also need atonement. Purgatory is how we atone for the sins against me that we didn’t atone for while alive.

(The welfare state must fail because it is contrary to human nature and diminishes the human spirit.)

Paul says in 1 Cor. 1:17 that he was not sent to baptize but to preach the gospel. So some claim this shows that baptism is not essential to salvation.
