Over a Quarter Century ago, PBS had a Ten-Part series about the Book of Genesis. I have not seen the series, but knowing the participants, I can imagine that the the perspective would lean towards skeptical criticism. (I may be wrong, so I will try and see if I can access the series on my computer). According to the description on the site, the series was divided up into ten Bible Stories in Genesis, in order, from Creation to Joseph's epic sojourn in Egypt.

In general "Textual Criticism" is not a bad thing. Certain areas of study, like context, historical agreement, the deeper meaning of words, cultural norms, and other elements, are important when studying Scripture. Having an awareness of these things can really enhance one's reading of the Bible. It helps to clear up episodes that don't make sense to us in our own culture. Things like slavery, harems, bride-prices, and Abraham claiming his wife was his sister, are so puzzling and disturbing that even strong believers struggle with them.

Unfortunately, these out-of-context verses sometimes provide ammunition to people who are hostile to the Message to begin with.

One of the most important things to remember is that, just because something appears in the Bible, doesn't mean that it is condoned by God. Before the Law was given to Moses (way after Genesis!), people did what was "right in their own eyes". Most of us can cite an instance where children grow up without any moral guidance, and what they can turn into.

Context is so important that Today's Verse is a total puzzle without it.

It comes at the end of the Story of Joseph and his Brothers, which is the last story in Genesis, starting in Chapter 38 and going to the end of the Book.

Right as we are getting into the Story of Joseph, there is a nasty little story seemingly plunked right in the middle of the saga. It's a tale that seems to erupt out of nowhere, concerning bridal customs, succession, prostitution, deception, and sex. (YIKES! What does that have to do with Joseph?)

Just for a quick synopsis: Judah marries his eldest son to Tamar. The son dies without a son. Judah follows the custom by marrying Tamar off to his second son, and then he dies too. There is a third son, but Judah becomes superstitious and denies Tamar her rights. Tamar then disguises herself as a prostitute, has sex with her father-in-law, and conceives twins. She has proof that Judah is the father, and so her children become the next in Judah's line and carry his name.

The context of this sordid tale doesn't make sense at first. Right after this event, Joseph picks up the thread again and his story is featured. We go through his period of slavery, of false accusations of rape, of imprisonment, of advising Pharaoh, and eventually saving his family from starvation. Jacob, who was Joseph's father, makes the long trip to Egypt to live out his days with his son whom he thought had died many years previously.

Now, Jacob is full of years and facing his own death. He calls all of his sons around him and gives a prophecy over each one.

The first three sons had incidents in their past that disqualified them from being head of the family, and Judah was the fourth in line. Today's Verse is from the Prophecy given over Judah (who was no "prize" either, by the way).

In a patriarchal family in which there was no king or government to speak of, Jacob announces that "The Scepter shall not depart from Judah". A "scepter" is the staff of a king. Jacob is prophesying that there will be kings in the line of Judah. Then Jacob gives a timeline: "until Shiloh comes". Strong's Concordance tells us that this Name appears only once in this form, is a Proper Noun of uncertain meaning, but is probably a Title for the Messiah. Now, if Judah's three sons had all passed away, how could there be a line of kings coming forth from him? Therefore, Tamar, while not exactly "doing the right thing", had assisted in fulfilling a prophecy without realizing it. Her story, far from being out of place where it is in the middle of the Joseph Saga, actually fits right in.

One of the reasons the Bible rings true is that it presents the characters as flawed human beings, not "superheroes" or "gods and goddesses". In fact, there are some characters that could be total jerks.

Only God is All-Good, and the flawed characters of both Ancient and Modern Times show the absolute need for His Grace and Mercy.
