Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

The Scriptures In Handel’s Messiah

Luke 2:8-11

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

King James Version

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art In Heaven,
Blessed and Hallowed is Your Holy Name!
You Are The Only One True God,
The Ancient of Days.
Who Knows The End from The Beginning,
And The Beginning From The End!

Thank You, Father,
For Giving us Your Word.
Thank You For Your Grace,
And Thank You For Your Forgiveness.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

(King James Version)

Here is the link to Today's Music.

Bethlehem is a very different place today than it was 40 years ago when I was there. I don't know if I am right about this, but I doubt if my story could take place today in these troubled times.

The Bus took us outside of the Town of Bethlehem, to a rolling, hilly area. Then, our guide took us out into the fields where there were a few rocky windbreaks. Avi our guide admonished us to be AT THE BUS before it got dark, as the bus would be leaving for the next stop (about a mile down the road) and it would be VERY DARK. Then he left us, presumably to have a cigarette, as it seemed like EVERYBODY in the Middle East smoked like chimneys.

There we were, in the middle of the Shepherds' Fields, Outside of Bethlehem, with a few scattered sheep and some Arab Shepherds in Traditional Garb, smoking and looking at us as if we were crazy.

Lo and Behold, somebody produced a guitar out of nowhere and asked if anybody knew how to play it. It ended up in my hands.

Being a busload of Pentecostal Preachers, we ALL loved to sing, loudly and with a lot of extra notes. Christmas Songs are not easy to play, as they have many more chord changes than a typical Pop Song, but I soldiered on, and we played and sang every song we knew and then some more. We even sang the "Hallelujah" Chorus from Handel's Messiah, with just the guitar accompaniment. Meanwhile, the Shepherds watched and listened, smoked a whole pack of cigarettes and opened another. The air got chillier, and soon the sky was sparkling with Stars. Ooops...it was REALLY DARK. We were sure the bus had already left as we inched our way back to the dirt road, following the little red lights of the Shepherds' cigarettes. When we got to the road, the bus had already gone to the next stop. We walked about a half mile in the dark, and there it was, all lit up with the engine running.

It was an experience I will never forget.

I never found out who brought the guitar, but it showed up again on a boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. Guess who ended up playing it again?

Psalm 29

A Psalm of David.

1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,*
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
worship the Lord in holy splendour.

3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl,*
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, ‘Glory!’

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!
